Q: Reporter - You said recently, “I have no intention of taking away folks’ guns.” But you support the D.C. handgun ban, and you’ve said that it’s constitutional. How do you reconcile those two positions?

A: Obama - Because I think we have two conflicting traditions in this country. I think it’s important for us to recognize that we’ve got a tradition of handgun ownership and gun ownership generally. And a lot of law-abiding citizens use it for hunting, for sportsmanship, and for protecting their families. We also have a violence on the streets that is the result of illegal handgun usage. And so I think there is nothing wrong with a community saying we are going to take those illegal handguns off the streets. And cracking down on the various loopholes that exist in terms of background checks for children, the mentally ill. We can have reasonable, thoughtful gun control measure that I think respect the Second Amendment and people’s traditions.

According to the Supreme Court of the United States of America, as well as simple common sense, “..handgun ownership and gun ownership in general” is MY and OUR Constitutional RIGHT….Not a tradition.

Eating waffles at midnight on New Years Eve with my children….THAT is a tradition, Mr. Obama.

I wish he would explain what an "illegal handgun" is. Judging by the name I would think it must be a fully automatic pistol that requires an FFL, but I doubt that's what he means.

Obama is so out of touch with the gun owning population and he just keeps making himself more out of touch. If he got elected President, I wouldn't be surprised if he pushed for a re-writing or repeal of the 2nd Amendment. As I watch some poll numbers lately, he is ahead of McCain. It's scary.

Obama can try to be as careful as he possibly can with what he says, but at the end of the day, there's no denying the fact that he is perhaps the most anti 2A presidential candidate in history. If you thought the AWB during the Clinton administration was bad, just wait and see what President Obama has in store for us.

We have violence on the street that is the result of criminals. Guns have nothing to do with the cause.

By illegal does he mean guns in the hands of criminals. If so then what we need to do is take the "criminals " off the street. Or is this another case of "It depends on your definition of what is is".
