Default New Orleans Gun Grab

This is old news and may have been addressed in other posts, but does anyone know of any lawsuits that have come out of the illegal seizure of peoples firearms in New Orleans following hurrican Katrina? It seems to me that the chief of police, Nagin et al. who gave the order, as well as any of the police/guard units that actually carried out the illigal siezures, should be getting sued like crazy. . . .

I haven't heard anything about this and wonder why not, considering it was such a flagrant abuse of power . . . .

I would also love to hear about the culpability of those involved in the illegal confiscations and the subsequent damage, loss, and harm caused.

I have heard precious little about it. To me, it says, "Your elected government is here to serve you, but if we harm you well...we made sure we're safe from you and your lawsuits."

Lawsuits aside, I think the more pertinent question is what YOU are gonna do when they come house to house for your guns. I had this discussion yesterday with a friend of mine and we were left staring at one another...

After 4 years, some are getting them back... although, the way they were kept, they probably do not want them back...

SAF SETTLES NEW ORLEANS LAWSUIT

For Immediate Release: 10/9/2008

BELLEVUE, WA – The Second Amendment Foundation has reached an agreement with the City of New Orleans in a 2005 federal lawsuit that stopped the city from seizing firearms in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
The landmark lawsuit, a joint effort by SAF and the National Rifle Association, was filed in September 2005 after police and National Guardsmen began confiscating firearms without warrant or probable cause from citizens who were not suspected of committing any crimes. Under terms of the settlement, which now awaits a judge’s signature, the city must try to return all firearms that were seized. Gun owners will be notified by mail within 30 days of the court’s approval that they can retrieve their guns.
“While we are delighted that this case is now settled,” said SAF founder Alan Gottlieb, “it should never have been necessary. When a disaster strikes, no government entity or official should arbitrarily decide that citizens must be disarmed and left defenseless, and that is what happened in New Orleans. These gun seizures were conducted without legal authority, under color of law and often at gunpoint, and that must never be allowed to happen again anywhere on American soil.
“What happened in the days after Hurricane Katrina was an outrage,” he continued. “We hope this permanent injunction sends a signal to mayors and police chiefs everywhere that we live in a nation of laws, and those laws are not subject to their whims. You do not suspend Constitutional rights just because of a storm or earthquake or some other natural or man-made disaster.
“We are proud to have partnered with the NRA on this effort,” Gottlieb stated. “This is not simply a victory for SAF or NRA members in New Orleans, but for all American gun owners. Despite indifference and obstruction by the city, perseverance has prevailed.”

I been giving this thread a bit of thought over the last few hours and it occurred to me; that like Oath Keepers (http://oathkeepers.org/) IF for example just the firearm owners in this country refused to be disarmed, no army on earth could make it happen; or even all of them combined...

With the spirit of Oath Keepers, perhaps expanding upon that with say a neighbor hood watch type program, where entire neighbor hoods agree to refuse to be disarmed...

For historical comparison; A not so ancient battle... the Battle of Isandlwana between Invading British and Native Zulu military units in 1879 in South Africa.
Basically about 20,000 Zulu Warriors with spears, knives and shields, annihilated some 2,000 Seasoned British troops whom had Artillery, Gatling guns, Rifles and the like.

Once again, Bohemian, you are right!

We do this where I live as a branch of the NC Militia. The NC Rangers is our answer to neighborhood watches, response to natural (or unnatural) disasters, and the taking-up of arms in defense of the US Constitution.

I realize that the "M" word is a bad word (because of the actions of a few), but that must change.
