I am looking to pick up a colt 1911 gold cup trophy for modification. Is this a good model to start with for a base gun? Also, I don't like the wrap around grip can traditional slab sides and checkering replace the wraparound rubber grips? Thanks for the help...

My Tricked out pony is A Gold Cup National Match it'll do nickel size groups at50+yds and yes the wrap around grips are not the norm the slab sides as you called the are standard issue. I got more into it than the gun itself
