    Cool Going to NY

OK now that I see even transporting my weapon in the state of NY is illegal. How do I go about traveling with a stop in NY to see relatives?

I would say break it down as far as you can (little pieces are harder to hide then one big one) and never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever consent to a search. Other then that I don't know what kind of answer you are going to get here. The smartest legal scholars in the world can not navigate the web of laws that New York city has to say with any kind of certainty what you can legally do without getting arrested. Please do not carry in the City based solely on info given in this forum, that is a sure way of extending your stay much longer then you want too.

are you visiting some place other than NYC? The rules are different outside of the big apple. I don't KNOW them, but I know they are different.

    Mike,
If you are talking about a pistol, there is no legal way for you to make a stop in NYS with a pistol. The socialist state of NY wants all non-residents to be defensless targets.

Ryan is exactly right. The only time you are legal transporting through the State of New York is if you are passing through, with gun unloaded, properly cased and locked. You have to be legal with your gun at both your origin and destination points for the Federal law to cover you.

HOWEVER...I have heard (and I have NO CITATION FOR THIS)...that if the weapon is discovered by law enforcement, you will still be arrested and incarcerated, and the firearm confiscated. When you get to trial, the Federal law can be used as a defense.

I transport my pistol (again, locked and properly cased) when I travel south from Massachusetts to visit family. I'm extra-careful about my speed and stops when going through NY and NJ.

NYS Troopers might give u warning if you're just passing thru, county sheriff's will probably do the same, city cops will arrest you, and town cops will throw the book at u. Best bet is to just b honest if u get questioned. Chances a're, no one will ever know. Just keep it locked with ammo separate.

The best advice that I can give is this...Ask your relatives to 'move out' of New York.

    Don't ask. Don't tell.
Face it, if your a responsable driver there is no reason for the cops to pull you over. And if no other choice but to break down a pistol n Barry in the truck, for God sakes don't tell a soul about it.
I live in NY and I hate how they accept no one. Most county level reps don't care and it sickens me that NYC seems to push everything. They should be their own district like Washington DC.

Just more info... I am traveling in a private airplane. (No not a jet just a general aviation cessna) And visiting my in-laws as part of a larger trip from TX, my home, to VA to up state NY to OH and then back home. I have a lock box for the travel but as much as I love my inlaws :) I don't want to spend a lot of "extra time" in NY.

    Thanks for all the replys.
