Well now. How about back to the OP? Know the laws and don't be stupid. Simple answer. As for the tips and tricks, that depends on what your trying to do.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I appreciate all sides and all info! This past weekend some scum shot and killed his pregnant girlfriend in Augusta then drove to Aiken and killed a LEO answering a suspicious vehicle call. I carry everyday and was at my daughter's gymnastics event when several of us started talking about it and the need to carry. I kept a couple cards from my instructor and gave a few out. Several folks already had their CWP and the others seemed very interested. It's a shame that 3 officers in the last 5 or 6 weeks have died, sadder still that it takes that to make folks think seriously about the issue of arming ourselves responsibly. Just a shame also that that precious Mom to be didn't have a weapon and protect herself, her baby and end his life before he took a third later. What a waste all the way around.

You carried at your daughters gymnastics event? At a school?

No, it wasn't at a school. It was at private gymnasium. Does that matter you think?

Not if it wasn't a school. It depends on who owns the Gym I guess. If it is owned by a town or county, something that basically belongs to the public, you know, gov't owned, you can't.

If it truly is private and there is no sign, I don't see a problem.

What type of Gym was it?

I guess your teacher will also take care of any responsibility for this irresponsibility (and you give this as advice on this forum?). Suppose you have just left the restaurant with your CCW and have an altercation that involves your firearm---when the police want to know how come you have a gun on you, what do you tell them? Worse--if you shoot someone how will you respond to the civil suit about the illegality of your firearm vis a vis the restaurant you just came out of? Hey jc: do yourself a favor and ignore the suggestion in the quote. It is tempting and is probably the only time I really want to CC (at night after restaurant walking back to car), but I CANNOT--IT IS AGAINST THE LAW.

Yeah, I don't carry in restaurants that serve bc I also have a nursing license that I need to protect too. As for anyone else, I say to each his own. The gym I was talking about is a private gymnastics gymnasium. There are no signs posted about carrying and I didn't think it mattered since it is not a government owned building.

JC, as a new permit holder myself, I just read through the law again to refresh my memory.

    SC 23-31-215 M:
A permit issued persuant to this section does not authorize a permit holder to carry a concealed weapon in a: (6) school or college athletic event not related to firearms..

No reference of who owns the facility.

My only thought here is be careful. It is the small, seemingly petty points that provide ammo to the gun haters. They don't need reason or rationality, just a well meaning CWP holder who slips up once.

Best of luck to you and your wife. Thanks for carrying and carrying responsibly.
