Hello everyone. I'm a new poster on this forum from Saratoga county. I've had trouble answering this question for myself doing research, so I figure I'd ask here.

I am currently in the process of obtaining my pistol license in Saratoga county. I am basically waiting for background checks to complete at this point; my paperwork is handed in, my fingerprints have been taken, and I have completed the required safety course.

I walked into a local gun store this afternoon to shop. I have already purchased a handgun that I entered on my initial paperwork, but I am looking for another that I can add shortly after I finally get the license in the mail. I found one I liked, and asked the employee of the shop if I could take a look at one of the guns in the case. He informed me that he could let me look at it out of the case, but I could not handle it, and that it is a misdemeanor in NY state for me to handle the firearm. He also said that if I brought in proof that my pistol permit application had been submitted, that I could then handle it in the store.

I have done a lot of research trying to find information on this to no avail. The other gun store I visited let me handle the pistols I was interested in purchasing for my permit without question. I understand that in NY you must be licensed to possess a particular firearm, but does that truly apply to pre-purchase handling? If that is the case, how am I supposed to tell if the gun I was interested in is something I would buy if I cannot handle it? I also don't see the correlation between me having a permit (or proof that I submitted an application to get a permit) and being able to handle the pistols in the case, as I am *still* not licensed to possess that particular firearm.

I am beginning to think the employee was just jerking me around (this place has a reputation for poor customer service unless you are in the armed forces or an LEO). If anyone cares to shed some light on this, it'd be much appreciated.

Once upon a time a good shepherd named Sam lived in a lush green valley. He tended a small flock of sheep and protected them and cared for them and took their wool for himself. And his herd would grow, for all the sheep nearby heard that his charges need not fear the butcher...as I was saying, Sam was a kindly shepherd.

And so Sam would take in sheep that ran away from other farms, where butcher's knife awaited them. Naturally, he would return the kind he didn't like...sheep with fleece that resembled dreadlocks or funny looking eyes or other undesirable traits. Still, all the animals around knew his place to be best.

The safety of the sheep and Sam's prosperity were further enhanced by Sam's long shotgun. The jackals soon learned to pick other prey and the sheep were content, though often cold for lack of fleece.

Over time, however, the happy sheep began to notice that something was amiss. For instance, when the jackals slinked by, Sam would no longer chase them. He would simply blast them from the porch of his spare but neat white house. The problem with that was simple: most of the pellets ended up in the sheep, with a distinct minority inconveniencing the jackals.

Moreover, whether because of myopia or a drinking problem, Sam would often fire upon black sheep of the herd, as if confusing them with the jackals. When the sheep complained, the herder would look puzzled and go home to enjoy fine mutton.

The situation grew intolerable, yet everyone knew that other ranches had the same problems, and worse. The most active of the herd had finally come up with a good idea. Next time the jackals came in to try their luck they were able to get right next to the sheep -- and then the rams and the ewes charged, giving hell with horn and hoof.

No sooner that the predators retreated, leaving mangled comrades in their wake, than did rancher Sam come out, shotgun at the ready. He surveyed the battleground and addressed the sheep. --"Sheep," he said "I m impressed! Who did this fine work?" Several planners of the ambush came forward, baaaing proudly.

Sam raised his shotgun and blasted the animal closest to him. The rest stood dumbfounded, not sure what to do. The shepherd quickly shot the others who came forward.

--"That" he declared "is the end to which all who employ violence against fellow animal will come." One ewe began to say that jackals were not exactly fellow animals, but the gaping muzzle of Sam's shotgun restored quiet.

Sam knew he was right, for if the dumb beasts learned to fend for themselves, he and his shotgun would be unemployed. Worse yet, fleecing would become outright perilous.

And so life goes on as before. Jackals eat better, and so does Sam. Stray pellets have a commendable ability to find sheep while seeking jackals. And the herd is content, for they know that the other sheep have it even worse.

 11.07.09
Grant County Announces Pro-Gun Policy Towards Non Residents.

While most of the recipients of our alerts are Oregon residents, we are pleased to be able to report that at least one Oregon County has announced a formal policy of encouraging non-residents to apply for concealed handgun licenses.

Grant County Sheriff Glen Palmer has just sent us his new CHL application and asked that we make it available on our website.

You can download it here. (Adobe Acrobat required.)

Of course, Oregon law still limits non-resident applications to residents of adjoining states, but this is clearly a positive development.

For years, one of the most commonly asked questions we have received at Oregon Firearms is "what sheriff is most likely to issue a license to a non-resident?" We can now report that at least one county has a formal policy of issuing.

Sheriff Glenn Palmer told us in a recent e-mail "I am kind of excited about doing this as it is high time that we do something favorable instead of taking something away from gun owners."

We encourage non-resident applicants to visit beautiful Grant County if they are seeking non-resident concealed handgun licenses. Of course, pro-gun residents should consider spending their vacation dollars in a county with such positive policies.

Contact info or the Grant County is available here.

MY CHP permit was denied the other day due to "Criminal possesion" charges.

This Charge stems back to early 05 (4+ years) where I voluntarily let the Police search my house. They turned up .63 grams (about the size of your pinky-nail) of Marijuana, I was charged and served out what was expected of me.

As I understand it, if it is a single charge, I should still be able to get the CHP. Do i have a chance with the Court of Appeals? I am learning to gunsmith and this would make things a LOT easier. Thanks guys. For the record, haven't touched anything like pot in at least 4 years.

The Army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people in the Fort Hood massacre told a radical Muslim imam, "I can't wait to join you" in the afterlife, in one of several e-mails exchanged between the two men, ABC News reported on Thursday.

An unnamed official "with top secret access" told the network 18 e-mails were exchanged between Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan and Anwar al-Awlaki, who encouraged Muslims to kill U.S. troops in Iraq, from Dec. 2008 until June of this year.

Other e-mails, the official said, included discussion of when jihad is considered "appropriate," and if it is acceptable for innocent people to die in suicide attacks.

"Hasan told Awlaki he couldn't wait to join him in the discussions they would having over non-alcoholic wine in the afterlife," ABC quoted the official as saying.

Hasan — with an annual salary around $92,000 — also wrote, "My strength is my financial capabilities," the source said. Investigators have found the Army major donated as much as $30,000 per year to Islamic "charities." American authorities have found several such charities to be conduits to terrorist networks.

A military analyst told ABC: "It sounds like code words ... That he's actually either offering himself up or that he's already crossed that line in his own mind."

A joint terrorism task force overseen by the FBI learned late last year of Hasan's repeated contact with al-Awlaki. The FBI said the task force did not refer early information about Hasan to superiors because it concluded he wasn't linked to terrorism.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates called it disturbing that Hasan has e-mail contact with the radical cleric in Yemen, but stressed that his review is separate from the criminal investigation into Hasan and should not be interpreted as a finger-pointing exercise against Muslims or anyone else.

Investigators have said e-mails between Hasan and the imam did not advocate or threaten violence. After the shootings, al-Awlaki's Web site praised Hasan as a hero.

Gates would not comment Thursday on whether he considers the Fort Hood attack a terrorist act. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, an independent, told a Senate hearing that he does, and urged a government investigation "to learn whether the federal government could have acted in a way that would have prevented these murders from occurring."

Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican, questioned whether the government failed to connect dots about Hasan.

"We must better understand why law enforcement, intelligence agencies and our military personnel system may have failed in this case," Collins said.

Hasan's psychiatry supervisors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center had expressed concerns in May 2007 about what they described as Hasan's "pattern of poor judgment and lack of professionalism."

President Barack Obama already has ordered a review of all intelligence related to Hasan, including his contacts with al-Awlaki, concerns raised about Hasan by some of his medical colleagues, and whether warnings were properly shared and acted upon within government agencies. Results of that inquiry are due Nov. 30.

The Pentagon said Thursday it will scour its procedures for identifying volatile U.S. military service members hidden in the ranks following the Fort Hood shooting rampage and lapses that might allow others to slip through bureaucratic cracks.

"It is prudent to determine immediately whether there are internal weaknesses or procedural shortcomings in the department that could make us vulnerable in the future," Defense Secretary Gates said.

A 45-day emergency investigation will examine personnel, medical, mental health, discharge and other policies in all corners of the vast Defense Department. It will also look at ways to improve security and emergency response at Defense Department facilities.

"The shootings at Fort Hood raise a number of troubling questions that demand complete but prompt answers," Gates told a Pentagon news conference.

The quick review will be led by two former Pentagon officials, former Army Secretary Togo West and former Navy chief Vernon Clark.

A longer, second review lasting about six months will look at what Gates called "systemic institutional shortcomings." Gates, who has fired several top officials in three years heading the Pentagon, did not address any possible consequences of the inquiries he announced Thursday.

Gates broached little new information about the case of Hasan, the Army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people and wounding more than 30 in the shootings at the Texas military post on Nov. 5.

Both Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the chief goal of the Pentagon probe is preventing another such attack and improving future responses by disaster teams.

West was Army secretary in the mid-1990s and later became secretary of veterans affairs. Clark was the chief of naval operations from 2000 to 2005.

In 2007, Gates named West co-chairman of a panel created to review rehabilitation care problems at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington and the National Naval Medical Center in suburban Bethesda, Maryland.

In 1995, as President Bill Clinton's Army Secretary, West ordered a review of the Army's racial climate, including whether there were ties between extremist groups and members of the military. The investigation was prompted by the arrests of two paratroopers in connection with the murders of two black people and concerns that the two men may have had ties to white supremacist groups.

Hello to everyone and very happy I've found this site. I'm hoping someone had a similar situation and can help!

I had a applied for a pistol permit in 5/09, had my hearing in Putnam County Court and was denied due to the fact that I had failed to list arrests that happened in 1976 (I was 17 yrs old at the time). I provided the Court copies of the dispositions for the arrests. I explained to the judge that I honestly did not remember these arrests did not intentionally try to mislead the court in any way, but denied anyway. I have an appeal scheduled for 12/11/09 and hoping someone can give me some ideas. Do I need to hire an attorney?

Thanks!

Family: Father shot teen son over contact with 3-year-old girl
Santiago Esparza / The Detroit News
Highland Park -- A 37-year-old man was arraigned today in 30th District Court after being accused of shooting his teenage son execution-style while the boy pleaded for his life.

Jamar Pinkney Sr. faces one count of first-degree murder, three counts of felonious assault and one count of felony firearm.

Judge Bridgette Officer today in court ordered Pinkney Sr. to be held without bond as he awaits a preliminary exam on Dec. 1.

The courtroom was packed with emotional family members, including one who broke down and was escorted out of the room.

Police allege Pinkney marched his naked son, Jamar Jr., 15, out of a home at gunpoint near Rosa Parks and North Tuesday, and forced him into an adjacent grassy field. Investigators say the father made his son kneel before shooting him in the back of the head. Relatives said Jamar Jr. was pleading for his life as he was shot.

Highland Park police officials said the shooting occurred after an argument between the suspect and his son.

Relatives said Jamar Jr. recently admitted that he'd had inappropriate physical contact with a 3-year-old several months ago.

Jamar's aunt, Yolanda Cherry, said a relative took the girl to a doctor to be examined on Sunday, and that there were no indications of sexual abuse.

"There is nothing normal about killing your child," Cherry said. "I don't know why he shot him. He was a good boy. This is so sad."

One of Pinkney's attorneys, Corbett Edge O'Meara, said his client's state of mind will have to be considered as the case proceeds.

"That is certainly something a prosecutor and judge and jury will have to take into account," he said. "It obviously is a tragedy for the whole family. The entire situation is a tragedy for all involved."

If convicted, Jamar Pinkney Sr. will spend the rest of his life in prison.

"No individual has the right to exact the death penalty on another, no matter how reprehensible the behavior," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said. "That is why we have laws."

The elder Pinkney stood silent in court as a not guilty plea was entered for him by the judge. He wore street clothes but was shackled.

Cherry said her nephew played football for several teams in leagues across the city and Detroit.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 24 at Second Ebeneezer Church, 14601 Dequidre in Detroit. A fund has been set up at the Charter One branch in Highland Park where people can donate money to help with funeral costs, Cherry said.

I stopped by the fun store tonight for something unrelated, and I wandered over to their Nagants. I've been considering one for a few days, and I wanted to see their conditions and markings.

They have a what appears to be a 91/30 with a turned down bolt. The numbers match on the bolt, barrel, and magazine floorplate, but I can't see anything that would suggest it was a sniper model, other than the bolt. It doesn't appear that there were any mounting holes, welded over or otherwise.

They want $150 for it, rather than the usual $109-120. I suppose the numbers could be force matched, but why stick a sniper bolt on it?

What, if anything, could I be looking at?

I've read a few posts lately that suggest that CC is better than OC because you retain the element of surprise.

Coming from a martial arts background many techniques were more effective if you added and element of surprise but these were static exercises and the idea that the BG would wait until you surprised him before continuing to kick your butt ludicrous.

I believe this is the same for handguns. What's going to happen? A BG assaults or targets you but then...AHA! You show them your hidden weapon and they are too shocked to continue?

I believe that rather than an element of surprise you have to cultivate an aura of preparedness and awareness. Take the sheep, wolf, and sheepdog comparison if you will. The wolf knows not only the sheep but knows the sheepdog too and avoids the one that doesn't appear to be an easy mark.

He looks like a sheepdog, acts like a sheepdog, he must be a sheepdog.

Whether you OC or CC I believe you need to project the image of one that shouldn't be messed with and that is what is most valuable to you. The wolf wants easy prey so that they have more chance of success and less chance of failure or injury.

Al Qaeda's Message Spreading Through English-Language...

Al Qaeda's Message Spreading Through English-Language Sites - International News | News of the World | Middle East News | Europe News - FOXNews.com
Print ShareThisRIYADH,Saudi Arabia — Increasing numbers of English-language Web sites are spreading Al Qaeda's message to Muslims in the West.

They translate writings and sermons once largely out of reach of English readers and often feature charismatic clerics like Anwar al-Awlaki, who exchanged dozens of e-mails with the Army psychiatrist accused of the Fort Hood shootings.

The U.S.-born al-Awlaki has been an inspiration to several militants arrested in the United States and Canada in recent years, with his Web-based sermons often turning up on their computers.

"The point is you don't have to be an official part of Al Qaeda to spread hatred and sectarian views," said Evan Kohlmann, a senior investigator for the New York-based NEFA Foundation, which researches Islamic militants.

"If you look at the most influential documents in terms of homegrown terrorism cases, it's not training manuals on building bombs," Kohlmann said. "The most influential documents are the ones that are written by theological advisers, some of whom are not even official Al Qaeda members."

Most of the radical Islamic sites are not run or directed by Al Qaeda, but they provide a powerful tool for recruiting sympathizers to its cause of jihad, or holy war, against the United States, experts who track the activity said.

The number of English-language sites sympathetic to Al Qaeda has risen from about 30 seven years ago to more than 200 recently, said Abdulmanam Almushawah, head of a Saudi government program called Assakeena, which works to combat militant Islamic Web sites.

In contrast, Arabic-language radical sites have dropped to around 50, down from 1,000 seven years ago, because of efforts by governments around the world to shut them down, he said.

Al Qaeda has long tried to reach a Western audience. Videotaped messages from its leader, Usama bin Laden, and his deputy Ayman al-Zawahri usually have English subtitles. But translations of writings and sermons that form the theological grounding for Al Qaeda's ideology, along with preachers like al-Awlaki, mostly eliminate the language barrier.

Al-Awlaki's sermons have turned up on the computers of nearly every homegrown terror suspect arrested in the United States, Kohlmann said.

Members of a group of Canadian Muslims arrested in 2006 for allegedly forming a training camp and plotting bombing attacks in Toronto listened to his online calls for jihad, according to the case against them in court. According to prosecutors, an al-Awlaki sermon on jihad was among the numerous materials — including videos of beheadings — found on the computers of five men convicted in December of plotting attacks on the Fort Dix military base in New Jersey.

On his Web site and in widely circulated lectures, the 38-year-old al-Awlaki, now in hiding in Yemen, often calls on Muslims to fight against the United States, accusing it of waging war on Islam in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Nidal Hasan, who has been charged in the Fort Hood shootings, contacted al-Awlaki nearly a year ago. In an interview published in The Washington Post, al-Awlaki said he did not pressure Hasan to carry out the shooting, but after the attack, al-Awlaki praised him as a hero. U.S. investigators have said Hasan appears to have acted alone, not on orders from anyone, when he opened fire Nov. 5 at the Texas military base, killing 13.

The cleric met two of the 9/11 hijackers at mosques where he preached in the United States, and after his return to Yemen he was detained for more than a year on suspicion of involvement in a kidnapping gang. Yemeni officials released him because they could not confirm an Al Qaeda link, but they say they are hunting for him again on suspicion he may have ties.

U.S. intelligence officials declined comment on the spread of English-language jihadist Web sites.

Such sites are expected to follow closely the upcoming trials of Hasan and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who is accused of being a top architect of the 9/11 attacks, said Rita Katz, head of the U.S. based SITE Intelligence Group, which follows on line militant traffic. The Obama administration announced this week that Mohammed and four others will be put on trial in New York City.

Almushawah said clerics like al-Awlaki are "more dangerous than any other group." And if these clerics are jailed, "it's no big loss for Al Qaeda because they don't belong to the network," he said.

Many of the sites post speeches by English-speaking clerics like al-Awlaki or, more often, translations of sermons and lectures by Arabic-speaking clerics.

One site, the Pulpit of Monotheism and Jihad links to sermons by al-Awlaki, alongside English versions of speeches by some of the top sheikhs of jihadist ideology — even some who are dead like Abdullah Azzam.

The proliferation of sites in English means "potential jihadists can know only their native language and still be radicalized," Katz said.

While al-Awlaki has become popular, "other, more prominent and influential Arabic-speaking jihadist sheikhs ... have had their works and speeches translated into English and other languages. Their works tend to be used more often by the jihadist community to justify violence," she said in an e-mail interview. Al-Awlaki "fills a void in that he can directly interact, understand and communicate with English-speaking jihadists in a way that Arabic-speaking clerics cannot."

Almushawah says most of the servers for the sites are in Britain, but they can be run from anywhere and most of them are operated and receive content from the U.S. Most of the clerics who appear on them are in the Arab world with some in France and England.

U.S. intelligence officials declined to comment on the spread of English language sites and their influence.

Saudi Arabia set up its Assakeena program after authorities found that 70 percent of Al Qaeda sympathizers were drawn to the group through the Internet. In the campaign, government-backed preachers monitor 400 radical Islamic web sites and inject a more moderate message on the sites.

The campaigners also directly contact and dialogue with militants they encounter on the Web, conversations that can take weeks or months. Of 2,631 militants contacted by the group, 1,170 withdrew their support for radicals, according to the campaign. About a fifth of the militants were from Europe and North American, and the rest from Arab countries.

Assakeena — the name is Arabic for "Tranquility from God" — is part of other hearts-and-minds programs the kingdom launched to complement its crackdown on Al Qaeda after the group carried out a series of attacks on foreigners and oil infrastructure in 2004.

Obama's Radical Rogues Gallery?
by Phyllis Schlafly November 20, 2009
Another kooky Barack Obama appointee became publicly known this month and quickly was thrown or voluntarily threw herself under the bus. Anita Dunn, the White House communications director (who led Obama's war on Fox News), said that Mao Tse-tung was one of her two favorite "political philosophers" whom "I turn to most" for answers to important questions.

History identifies Mao as a ruthless savage, not as a philosopher. He probably holds the record for ordering the mass murder of more people (50 to 100 million) than anyone else in history.

Dunn tried to claim that her statement was a joke, but anyone can look at her actual statement on Youtube and see that she spoke in deadly earnest. Dunn was part of Obama's inner circle and a senior media adviser during the 2008 presidential campaign.

Dunn's husband, Bob Bauer, an expert on campaign financing, fundraising, and voter mobilization, is Obama's personal lawyer. He has just been appointed White House Counsel where he will be in charge of vetting Obama's appointees.

Obama's Green Jobs Czar, Van Jones, had to exit in disgrace after he admitted that "I was a Communist." We can thank Glenn Beck for exposing him.

Obama's Regulatory Czar, Cass Sunstein, wrote a book in 2008 in which he declared that the government "owns the rights to body parts of people who are dead or in certain hopeless conditions, and it can remove their organs without asking anyone's permission." So, after the death consultants authorized in Nancy Pelosi's health care bill convince you to reject life-saving procedures, the organ-transplant team can remove your body's organs immediately.

Czar Sunstein also argues that animals are entitled to have lawyers to sue humans in court. Bow, wow; more business for trial lawyers. His wife, Samantha Power, is now on Obama's National Security Council. She is famous for writing a Pulitzer Prize-winning book about genocide, which she defined so narrowly that it excluded Stalin and Mao.

Obama's nominee for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Chai R. Feldblum, signed a 2006 manifesto endorsing polygamous households. This lengthy document, called "Beyond Same-Sex Marriage," argues that traditional marriage should not be "privileged above all others."

Obama's education appointments, who came out of the Chicago political machine right along with Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod, will have nearly $100 billion in new money to indoctrinate America's youth. Obama's Secretary of Education Arne Duncan is notorious for trying to start a gay high school in Chicago.

Obama's Safe Schools Czar, Kevin Jennings, founded the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN), a homosexual activist group that now has thousands of chapters at high schools across the nation.

GLSEN chapters and materials have promoted sex between young teens and adults and sponsored "field trips" to gay pride parades. Jennings was the keynote speaker at a notorious GLSEN conference at Tufts University in 2000 at which HIV/AIDS coordinators discussed in detail, before an audience including area high school students, how to perform various homosexual acts.

Obama's Science Czar wrote in a college textbook that compulsory "green abortions" are an acceptable way to control population growth. We assume that what makes an abortion green is when the motive for the killing is population control to serve environmentalist dogma.

Affirmative action is in vogue in Obama's administration: his Diversity Czar has spoken publicly of getting white media executives to "step down" in favor of minorities. Obama's first appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court is a woman who said repeatedly that a "Latina woman" would make better judicial decisions than "a white male."

Obama's top lawyer at the State Department, Harold Hongju Koh, calls himself a transnationalist. That means wanting U.S. courts to "domesticate" foreign and international law, i.e., integrate it into U.S. domestic law binding on U.S. citizens.

Koh is eager to put us under a global legal system that would diminish our "distinctive rights culture" such as due process, trial by jury, and our First Amendment "protections for speech and religion" that give "far greater emphasis and judicial protection in America than in Europe or Asia." Under global governance, the United States will be forbidden to allow more freedom and constitutional rights than other countries.

When Obama's appointee for the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, David Hamilton, was a District Court judge, he prohibited the Indiana State Legislature from giving an invocation that mentioned Jesus, while mention of Allah was allowed. Hamilton worked for ACORN and the ACLU, and even the liberal American Bar Association rated him "not qualified."

And we thought the Rev. Jeremiah Wright was an embarrassment to Barack Obama when he was running for President! We never dreamed Obama would actually appoint such a collection of weirdos.
