Got pulled over around 0100 coming back from downtown. I'm usually designated driver for most of my friends and I was running a friend home - got popped crossing the bridge - and pulled over shortly thereafter. Officer said I was doing 56 in a 40, which - I have a digital speedometer that said I was doing no more than 45 the whole time as I was just having a conversation about people speeding over the bridge.

Officer approached my window, where I had my hands visible on the steering wheel, palms up - asked me for identification at which point I presented my drivers license and ccw permit. I was asked if I had been drinking, to which I said no, and was then asked to exit the vehicle.

I complied - stepped out, and was told I was to be given a field sobriety test as there was a "strong odor" coming from my vehicle. Officer had me follow his finger, told me I was good, and to return to my vehicle.

the officer returned to his vehicle - and returned to mine a short while later, and told me thank you for being a sober driver - and to head home. no ticket.

interesting.

I was visiting my son in Illinios one day and on his street lives a sheriff deputy and the deputy sheriff of Will County. My son told him that I had just gotten my CCW license. The deputy sheriff asked me if I had a weapon in my car and I told him yes, but it was unloaded. I got the gun and took it into the house. With two small grandchildren we went into a room and I closed the door. When I turned aroud the deputy had my Glock dis-assembled. I asked him what he was doing and he said not to worry that he carried a Glock. After he finished looking at it, he tried to put it back together and pulled the slide back so far that it jammed, and he couldn't
get the slide back in the right position.
It cost me $35 dollars to have a gunsmith fix it.

Last week, I went to a local Wawa (convenience store). A local cop SUV parked next to my car and got out as I was going in. As usual, I was open carrying.

The cop smiled and asked me what I was carrying. I told him it was a Glock 17. He smiled again and told me I made a good choice - Glocks were his preference too. Then we parted ways and nothing more. This is incredibly surprising, considering the rather "upscale" neighborhood I was in. I would have sworn that I would have gotten at least a "talking to".

A week before that, I was in line at Dunkin' Donuts, open carrying. In front of me was a Pennsylvania State Trooper. He glanced around, looked at me, looked at my hip (with my holstered Glock), looked at me again, then turned around and waited to order. Nothing said.

Looks like police are generally coming around to the legality of carrying a weapon.

I bet this was an expensive legal battle... but what else do you do when a person comes in your yard with an AR15 and an attitude? It's unfortunate that he had to wait this long to be cleared of what seems to be an obvious self-defense shooting, even if it was against a state deputy. They're just "Civilians On Patrol" and not above the law. Glad to see the system working, sorry to hear it had to end with a death.

Man cleared in 2004 death of off-duty Beaufort deputy The Post and Courier - Charleston SC newspaper

COLUMBIA, SC — A man has been cleared in the 2004 shooting death of an off-duty South Carolina sheriff's deputy.

The State reported that 63-year-old Thomas Rye of Eastover was found not guilty of murder late Monday in the death of 22-year-old Robert Odam, a Beaufort County sheriff's deputy from Bluffton.

Rye had shot Odam after a number of Rye's pets had been killed on his property.

Rye was convicted of murder in 2005, but the South Carolina Supreme Court ordered a new trial, saying property owners have the right to use "reasonable force" against a person who is trespassing.

Testimony indicates Odam was carrying an AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle when he went onto Rye's property on Aug. 14, 2004. The property was fenced and had No Trespassing signs.

Rye had a .30 caliber rifle and fired after a confrontation.
