Boxer to Introduce Common-Sense Concealed Firearms Act of 2011

Washington, D.C. January 22, 2011 – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) today announced that next week she will introduce the Common-Sense Concealed Firearms Act of 2011, which would require all states that allow residents to carry concealed weapons in public to have minimum standards for granting permits.

Senator Boxer said, "The tragic events in Tucson earlier this month are a reminder of why we need common-sense gun laws. This measure will establish reasonable permitting standards for Americans who wish to carry concealed firearms. According to a recent poll, more than 60 percent of respondents believe there should be a reasonable permitting process for those who wish to carry concealed firearms."

Senator Boxer's legislation would require all states that allow residents to carry concealed weapons to establish permitting processes that would include meaningful consultation with local law enforcement authorities to determine whether the permit applicant is worthy of the public trust and has shown good cause to carry a concealed firearm.

Currently, two states do not permit residents to carry concealed firearms, while three states, including Arizona, allow residents to carry concealed firearms in public without a permit. The other 45 states require residents to obtain permits to carry concealed firearms, but the majority of these states would not meet the standard set in this bill.

Senator Boxer plans to introduce the legislation when the Senate reconvenes next week.

"Common sense" is what a liberal/progressive says when they really mean "bend over".

Although this may sound good at first because all states would have be forced to permit CC, allowing the federal government to set nationwide "common sense" standards is simply allowing the camel's nose under the tent. The Second Amendment says nothing about "meaningful consultation" or local cops determining if you are "worthy".

Why would Barbie B suddenly change her mind and do something good for gun rights and gun owners? We must fight this and stop it from becoming reality.

Meaningful consultation with local law enforcement authorities. That's the bad part, where I live the law lets the thieves loose, and are kin to the gang members. I don't trust the law in this County. Around here it's who you know that's important and not the law.

Ms. Boxer needs to stay out of the individual state's business and mind her own. I don't care what kind of "common sense" law she is proposing if it comes from the federal level I am against it no matter what. As the previous poster said there is the 1oth amendment that says stay out of our business.

Look at NJ's "justifiable need", where Judges and PD's decide. No civilian, not even a kidnap victim, gets a CCW! "Common sense" is about as vague as "Global Warming."

I'm guessing that this will be another bill of hundreds of (unread) pages. There are no guarantees, but at least the House, and possibly the senate too, has a little more of a differently defined "Common sense," now that the 2010 elections have passed so that this Boxer legislation can be called out for the garbage that it is and not be passed without reading it, like the other bills in 2009/2010 that were forced upon us.

Another attempt at politicization of a tragedy, which will not stop people from killing other people. The real problem is missed again.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, 30,797 people died on U.S. highways in 2009. And, Hey...driving is a privilege, not a Constitutional Right! Funny that you don't hear Barbara Boxer suggesting higher federal standards to be forced down on the states with regard to driver's license requirements. Most involved excessive speeds, but I don't hear anyone trying to limit top speed or horsepower of the vehicles on our roads.

Common Sense? From a California Democrat??? That combination makes about as much sense as a football bat.

Hey, Barbara... we know your game. Place the phrase "common sense" in the title of your manure gun-control legislation, and try to pass it off as relevant.
