There is no cause worth dying for that it it too great to live for.

If you perish there is no hope that you will ever help win the fight. It is noble to die on the battlefield but once you die then all hope is gone. While there is breath there is hope. Do you think hat all the Jews should have killed themselves in Egypt rather than being led to the promised land by Moses.

Yes he said to continue fighting even when there is no hope. Once you are dead there is no hope, but you can still fight while on your knees. Otherwise you are just a heoric memory.
