HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Police said a female member of the UA-Huntsville faculty shot and killed three co-workers on campus.
Huntsville Police, Madison County Sheriff's department and HEMSI responded to a shooting at the UAH campus at 4:00 Friday afternoon.
The shooting happened in the Shelby Center, a math and science classroom building.
Authorities said a female faculty member during a Biology faculty meeting learned she would not receive tenure. She then pulled out a gun and started shooting.
Tenure in this case refers to a senior academic's contractual right not to have their position terminated without just cause.
Police also have the alleged shooter's husband in custody. He has not been formally charged with anything.
UA-Huntsville spokesman Ray Garner confirmed three people were shot and killed.
Three others were wounded.
The FBI, ABI and U.S. Marshals are assisting in the investigation.
"Everybody's thoughts and prayers are with the families. The board will stay informed on what has happened and will do what it can to support the University," said University of Alabama Board of Trustees President Finis St. John IV.
"I am deeply saddened to hear of this horrible tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with the students, faculty, and staff of the University of Alabama Huntsville, and especially with the families of the victims," said Senator Richard Shelby.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families," said Congressman Parker Griffith. "I am in contact with local authorities and am awaiting further details."
"This is a tragedy of immeasurable proportions and a terrible a blow to our community. Now is a time for thoughtful prayer for those affected. This is a devastating event for our community – and we all feel the shock from this tragedy," he continued.
Governor Bob Riley offered the state's assistance.
"This is a horrible tragedy and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. I want to commend the Huntsville police, the Sheriff's office and State Troopers for their response. If there is any assistance state agencies can provide to local authorities, it will be provided," he said.

It is a shame that anyone should feel the need to do such - all it achieves is to blacken the concept of firearms. Very soon there will be cries for the banning of firearms again, and we, the legally responsible carriers of concealed weapons will be the target.

All I can say is I hope it isn't learned that she was a concealed permit holder. That would be an even larger black eye in my mind. It does tend to support the possition of the Students for Concealed Carry on Campus organization though. Maybe if they had the right, someone could have protected themselves, or is that one of the few that allows licensed concealed carry?
We better get ready to FIGHT for our 2A rights. There's just way too much going on not to prompt a huge outcry for "the guns".
I really don't know if there is hope for this country. We've turned into a loony bin. The traditional (hard-working, freedom-loving) American is considered an extremist, is in a minority, and is fading fast. Meanwhile, the lunatics are running the asylum.
.... I thought schools were "gun free zones"?..... That concept doesn’t seem to be working out too well for the sheep.....
The gun free zones are the places that all of these massacres take place. If someone else in the room had a CCW, it would be a totally different story coming out of this college. I guess that they don't get the connection.

They most definitely get the connection,don't ever be so naive as to believe otherwise. To present the truth in connection with CCW, and to except the truth as we gun enthusiasts know it to be true, would be using common sense and promoting the 2nd amendment, CCW, etc. etc. They cannot allow that to happen.The gun free zones are the places that all of these massacres take place.
