INDIANAPOLIS -- Police say a 4-year-old boy fatally shot his 3-year-old playmate.

Lt. Jeff Duhamell told The Indianapolis Star that the boy picked up a loaded .45-caliber handgun that had been left on a kitchen table in Fiona C. Lee's house Thursday and pointed it at the girl's head before firing.

Lee's daughter, Aunesti Lee Allen, died that day at Riley Hospital for Children.

Duhamell said Friday that the boy is the son of Lee's boyfriend.

Police say they found cocaine and marijuana in Lee's home and arrested the 26-year-old woman on child neglect and drug charges. She was being held Friday in the Marion County Jail.

Duhamell said Lee's two other children witnessed the shooting. They are being cared for by a relative.

I simply read the title of the thread and was immediately saddened. Irresponsible individuals are the reason for this tragedy.
I'm sure the parents were tending to their habit rather than their children...

I am still wondering how a 4yr old can manipulate a 45. Something seems wrong here, and I am thinking maybe the parent(s) are involved somehow and covering it up.

By no means am I sticking up for the parents, but it's possible that the gun discharged from the child dropping it, or that it was a 1911 or some other model with a hammer, and the hammer was cocked at the time the child discovered it, making it easier for them to pull the trigger.

Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.

If it was a 1911 and it was left cocked and unlocked it would be very easy for a 4 year old to use it. I have the M&P45 and when it's loaded and a round chambered, all that's required to fire the weapon is a trigger pull. A Glock would be the same design..

The fact that the unattended, loaded, and unsecured firearm was left in a place that was accessible by anyone is the issue. In this case the parents (in name only) are to blame. Can't prosecute a 4 year old in this case. My post by the way, is not meant to flame you. I just read the post and thought I'd interject..

    The above speaks volumes.
