We lived in the DPRK until '92, when I found a job in WA State and we moved to Free America. Not be flippant, but I second S&WM&P40. You may be able to jump through all the requisite hoops and prostrate yourself before the right tapeworm, but you will still be living in a Communist country. Since leaving the DPRK in May '92 we have been back for a visit 3 times, and every time we cross the border on the way out I experience a palpable feeling of relief, like returning to the USA from Mexico. Getting out may not be an immediate answer for you, but if it's what you want, start making plans. I got my carry permit (not as good as AK, VT, or AZ but easy in WA) and I carry regularly. Going into the Peoples' Republic of Seattle I may carry 2 or 3. God, it feels good to live as a free man!

Don't let them scare you away. Depending on where your residence is, the difficulty varies greatly. If you're in New York City you should get a lawyer and I will wish you good luck.

Each county has its own rules for issuing a license. But they are not unattainable. Look in the phone book for the county pistol license office. Call them and ask what the procedure is. Usually you will need to take a pistol safety course similar to or the NRA Pistol course. Then they will give you an application. The application will require you to answer several questions about yourself and your references. You will also need a set of fingerprints taken by some LEO agency. Then you will be checked with the FBI and state database. Often you will then be interviewed by the judge or his lieutenants. The fees vary from around $150 to $350. It may take as much as 6 months, but 6-8 weeks is about normal. The hard part is getting all the stuff done to submit the application.

Oh, I almost forgot, you must be a legal resident of New York state.

Once you get your license outside of NYC, it is good for life. Every year some pol tries to make it expire after some period of years and you'd have to reapply, but so far we have fended that off.

We left NY 13 years ago.. As it's been said, It's great to live as a free man..

You winter here in Florida, so at least get your non-resident FL permit.. This will provide you with a permit for many states (NOT NY!!!)..
