Congrats on the CC permit. That's always a good day.
Welcome to the forum from north of the Red River.
Mailed in my CHL paperwork on January 22nd, it arrived today. We're going to Houston tomorrow to put another load of stuff in storage (moving there when school's out), glad it came in time so I can legally carry on the trip.
Carrying a gun is a big responsibility. It's the power of life and death!
I love all of you guys. I keep telling my wife that this forum is helping me mature in this area, "getting my mind right" in advance regarding situations I might encounter. Having the correct mind-set is crucial if and when something happens.
I appreciate so much when someone posts about a lesson they've learned (sometimes frightingly). I soak it all in, because I "get it", carrying a gun carries consequences and responsibilities we cannot fully imagine. I have had an increased awareness of the need to steer clear of potential conflicts, because using a gun against someone is the last thing we ever want to do.
As I said, we're moving from Amarillo to Houston in May. So much random violence down there. I'm 53, and as we get older, these punks often start seeing us as an easier target.
Huge differences between Amarillo and Houston. In Amarillo, I can walk into a convience store and the clerks are always so friendly. In Houston, I can see them instantly sizing me up, guarded, deciding if I might be a threat. So sad that some places are like that.
Anyway, I intend to not only be safe, but smart and prudent. And you guys are helping me.
Thank you.

^ Lol, Plenty of shiny CCW badges at the gun show this weekend that I went too. Not sure how many people actually bought them.

You're correct about the responsibility of carrying a weapon. I remind myself of that every time I strap on my gun.
Good luck in Houston. I used to have a lot of business in Houston on the south end around the space center. IMO, it is as bad as Detroit from a crime perspective.

Thanks.
We've made three trips down there to put stuff in storage (got back from last trip last night), and have stayed in a different motel each time because we were uncomfortable with some of the characters we see roaming around at night. Sunday, we stopped at a less-than-new convenience store in old Katy, and my wife wanted me to put my gun in my pocket before I got out of the car!
I'm still trying to decide how much of it is just culture-shock coming from Amarillo, but I know not all of it is. Houston seems to be a rough place if you don't pay attention.
I have a compact XD-9, and will be getting a sub-compact XD-40 so it stays better concealed in my pocket.
