Shot fired at Neversinnk Town Hall; 2 resign

GRAHAMSVILLE — Two Town of Neversink employees abruptly resigned this week after one of the employees fired a gun in Town Hall.

Deputy Town Clerk Sue Kitson and Code Enforcement Officer Dave Sparling are gone, Supervisor Greg Goldstein said on Friday.

Sparling brought a handgun to Town Hall on Monday and was showing it to Kitson in the first-floor code enforcement office around 1 p.m. Kitson held the gun and pulled the trigger. It discharged.

The bullet hit a chair, and went through the floor and wound up in the basement. There were no injuries.

"It is unfortunate, but the two employees did resign," Goldstein said.

Undersheriff Eric Chaboty said he was unaware that any police agency responded.
"We wouldn't be required by law to investigate something like that," Chaboty said. "Nobody was injured and nobody was doing anything illegal with the gun. There is no crime so nobody called us."

Sparling, a former Town of Tusten code inspector, was hired in October after resigning from Tusten when his pay was cut.

The Town Board held an emergency meeting Wednesday, appointing retired Code Enforcement Officer John Perrella to the part-time position. Goldstein said employees have been told not to bring guns to work.

The Town Board plans to draft a formal policy, Goldstein said.

Does anyone see what's wrong here? Both of these people held a CCW permit.

Lessons learned?

1. ALWAYS KEEP THE GUN POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION.
2. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL READY TO SHOOT.
3. NEVER ACCEPT A LOADED GUN FROM ANYONE. ENSURE THE CYLINDAR OR SLIDE IS OPEN AND THE GUN IS UNLOADED BEFORE ACCEPTING IT.

These morons broke the basic NRA safety rules. And contrary to the statement by the undersheriff, the law was broken. NYS Penal Law 120.20 defines Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree as "recklessly enaging in conduct which creates a substantial risk of physical injury to another person."

Of course with your higher intellect and flawless ability to determine who the idiots are, we all should take stock in reading a statement like that and agree with the concept... ***** happens and mistakes are made everyday by gifted individuals and idiots alike.. So we all should have to submit to a NOGODS screening before applying for a license or permit to own or carry a firearm? Oh dear Lord help us all... Does the term Dictator hold any meaning for you?

It's the "Only I possess the mental acuity and correct disposition to own a gun" mentality... In his view we ( that includes anyone reading this post, having an opinion that differs from his, or consuming food, producing waste, and walking upright on the surface of the earth) are unfit, ineligible, and should not be trusted with the responsibility of firearms ownership...
