5-Year-Old Dead In Shooting Accident - News Story - KRDO Colorado Springs

FREMONT CO., Colo. -- Fremont County sheriff's deputies say a 5-year-old girl is dead after a shooting accident.

They say it happened Monday night around 8:00 at 1730 Diamond Back Trail in northeast Fremont County.

Deputies say the girl, Ruth Joy Wilson, died from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to her head.

Deputies tell us the child had apparently been handling a .45 caliber handgun in her parents’ upstairs bedroom when the gun discharged.

The victim’s parents and an infant were not injured and were downstairs in the residence when the accident occurred.

The parents are identified as 30-year-old Levi Wilson and 26-year-old Grace Ann Wilson.

I don't have young kids in the house so I don't keep my gun locked up, although it is hidden. However, once grandchildren are in the picture, that will change. Anyone who has little kids and guns are complete idiots to not have the guns secured. Tragic loss and more fodder for anti-gun fanatics.

Our kids are grown and out of the house. But my guns are locked up or under my direct control at all times. You never know when a guest young or old might venture where they don't belong. Be safe.

God! I hate seeing this kind of thing. I know it's harsh and the parents will suffer over the tragedy but parents that are that irresponsible should be horse whipped in public. If they can afford the gun and ammo for it, they can sure as hell afford a $15 trigger lock.

It's that "It will never happen to me" mentality that always jumps up and bites us in the butt. How can you have children in the house, with firearms in the house, exposed?

Next question is, "How early do you start to train your children about guns?"

Default Make sure your guns are kid-proof. And make sure your kids are gun-proof.

My daughter was about 4 years old when I got my first concealed carry permit and first handgun. (She's 20 as of this writing...so this was 16 years ago when I was much more aggressive and maybe not quite as responsible as I am now.) Anyway - I always did my best to teach her gun safety. And one night it paid off.

We had just moved into a small city, and the neighborhood was a little questionable. One night, I heard what I thought were gunshots outside. Being young and brash, I grabbed my 9mm and went outside to investigate. I couldn't make out where they were coming from - so I went back inside and called 911.

The 911 operator informed me that the noises I had heard were firecrackers. (I'm guessing she had dispatched police to the scene already.) I breathed a sigh of relief, and reached down to the end table to get my pistol and put it away.

    It wasn't there.

I looked all around, and couldn't find it anywhere.

Did I somehow leave it outside? No, I'm sure I brought it in...

    Oh no...did Danielle have it...?

Then I heard her little voice from behind me. "Daddy..."

I turned around, scared to death at what I might find.

There was my sweet little girl, standing in the hallway, about 3 feet from my gun, pointing at it. I had left it on a yet-to-be-unpacked box in the hallway.

I was a LOT more careful from that day on about where and how I store my firearms. And to this day I am INCREDIBLY proud of my daughter for listening and understanding when I explained to her about gun safety, and for acting safely in what could have become a tragic situation.

Make sure your guns are kid-proof. And make sure your kids are gun-proof.

    Wait... wait. You're responsible now?

Just kidding Phil. Solid story. Thanks for sharing. My heart would be in my throat for sure.

    But.... you're sure you're responsible now? ;-)
