I am looking for a gun with similar feel of the glock 27. Three requirements; must have true safety, be 3.5 inch barrel or less, and under 500.00. Thank you.

The glock has no safety.

Glocks have three internal safeties that will not allow the gun to fire unless the trigger is pulled. Having said that, you could buy an aftermarket safety and have it installed for a lot less than $500. Just do a google search for "manual safety for glocks" without the quotes.

I think the Beretta PX4 compact is about $500. I've got a full size PX4 and really like it.

having owned glocks, XD's, PX4, and several brands of 1911's.

I will now always recommend a 1911
if you need more ammo per clip, then a Para or STI

Check out the Ruger SR9c! I actually like my ruger better than the glock!

I like the M&P, you can ge one with a safety, change out the backstraps.
I carry a 40 compact.

Check out the Ruger SR line of guns. The SR9c is about the same size as a G26. The SR40 series is also an option as well as the SR1911 if you want to go that route.

The PX4 Storm Sub Compact has a safety, changeable grip panels, 9mm or 40S&W and right at $500!!A real sweet shooter with unquestionable quality....IMHO
