The young lady isn't facing any charges. No charges were brought against her at all. I haven't seen anything that says she was even detained.

Hopefully you're right. He has been charged with 1st Degree murder.

I wish you could've seen the whole interview. She is extremely conflicted with what happened, and literally said during the interview that she's scared that now that she has killed someone, she will go to Hell.
Further, I found nothing condescending at all in what Dr. Phil said to her in the clip I provided. While what he said may well be obvious to all of us who have spent significant parts of our lives thinking about the implications of taking another human being's life, what he said in that clip was in context to the parts of the interview that aren't in the clip where it was beyond obvious how unprepared Mrs. McKinley was/is to deal with the aftermath of killing someone.
If you want to see a ridiculously inappropriate reaction to Mrs. McKinley, check out another TV counselor, Dr. Drew, in the clip below, where he introduces Sarah and her baby by saying, "And, Sarah McKinley, who went through this terrible experience just last week...Sarah, you were just 18....and there's the uh...the uh...accomplice." "Accomplice," of course, referring to the infant baby she was holding. Lisa Bloom, daughter of Gloria Allred and a lawyer (and mother) herself, was one of Drew's other guests, and she could just barely bring herself to say that Sarah was justified in shooting the scumbag, but when she did, Drew said, "Yeah, but lethal force??"
I'm not a fan of any TV purveyors of psycho-babble, but I did take a strong interest in Sarah's story, and violated my commitment to my own self not to pollute my mind with that kind of garbage when I happened to recognize her face while channel surfing. I have seen some coverage that was fair, some that was a wash, and quite a bit that was questioning and downright adversarial to her actions. Dr. Phil treated her fairly, with full respect (and knowledge) of her right to pull that trigger when she did, a clear understanding and sensitivity to her feelings and second-guessing of herslef that she exhibited during the interview, and a commitment to provide after-care support for her in the weeks and months to come.
Dr. Drew, on the other hand, should lose his freakin' job over his bleeding heart leftist commentary, but the fact is, he's on CNN and only pushing their party-line.
I totally get not being a fan of Dr. Phil, but I think criticism of him in this instance is way misplaced. He gave her excellent advice and offered her expensive care and help in finding competent professionals to provide it, things which she is probably less prepared to deal with than all the media attention and just the shock of having had to kill someone in the first place.

Gun Control: The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her own pantyhose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to Police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound.
