Kinda wondering this myself.
Several internet sellers have the Colt 6920 for under a $1000 right now.

There are bunches at Gunshows. AR's are way down right now, almost 1/3 off of what they were a couple or three years ago.

Built my own for about $875. It is a Palmetto State Armory brand with Magpul MOE furniture. Very easy and fun to build. Can't wait to do another. They sometimes have great deals on stripped lower receivers.
You can build an AR through Palmetto state for less than $600 almost always and very easily when they have their lowers on sale for $49. $1000 for an AR is way too much if you're talking a basic rifle/carbine. I know building one scares some people but it is really just putting the parts together and isn't any more difficult than putting together IKEA furniture if you can follow directions. Of course, a buddy who's done it before always helps.
