In this case, the aggressor was definitely being driven by ego. And when the gun was drawn on him, he did not "decide he had someplace else to be." He stood a few yards away and called the police on the guy who drew the gun.
(Caveat: I'm not entirely convinced that we're getting the whole story in my sample post. I suspect from the way it was told that there may have been ego in play on both sides. But my point remains.)
I think the boldface text above, where the author talks about moving for cover vs doing a "John Wayne," speaks volumes. A perfect illustration of a practical response vs an ego-driven response.
