Picking up a teacher at a school.

Hi. I'm new to firearms carrying and just applied for my GFL two weeks ago. To prepare I've been reading through the various laws however I still have a question I hope someone smarter than me can answer... Now I know GA law says a GFL holder can carry while dropping off or picking up a _student_, but I don't have a student at the local school. I have a teacher.

My wife is a 2nd grade teacher and I sometimes have to pick her up, drop her off, or come to the school with her to do some work in the classroom. Would it be illegal if I were to carry while dropping her off in the morning or picking her up in the afternoon? What about leaving the firearm in the car while I go inside to deliver a box of books or a stack of pizzas? What about leaving it in the car while the wife and I go into the classroom to move desks/tables/boxes/computers around for a few hours to get ready for the beginning/ending of the school year?

Don't know about Georgia but in South Carolina it must remain in vehicle and locked on school grounds.

I do the same here in MA. I have a small safe in the truck. Best to ask a local attorney for advice to review the local laws. The way the law reads here it's illegal to carry on school grounds. If it's locked in the truck safe I'm not carrying.

I don't know the answer to your question but in all honesty, I'd leave it in the car. Why risk it?

Your wife will be able to carry if she gets a GFL. You can secure the firearm in your vehicle if you need to go to the school, but it looks like you're not covered.

Oh yeah. Never ever planned to take my weapon in school. I always even leave my pocket knife in the car when I go in the building.

OK I reread more the link more carefully than I had before. I was confused before because I was hung up on the part where it talks about picking up a student. Apparently I'll be OK if it's in a locked container in the vehicle.

If all you're doing is picking her up and not getting out of the car you will be fine. If you have to get out of the car for any reason leave the firearm locked in the glove compartment. Of course the best thing to do is ask your local law enforcement and get their perspective on it.

Law enforcement will tell you that you can't do it. Talk to a lawyer and find out what is actually LEGAL.

I'm guessing that the reason it specifies "student" is because that is what the average person goes there to do. Most teachers would be driving themselves so that wasn't even taken in account when the law was worded. In my opinion, picking up is picking up no matter who you are picking up.

I 2nd the suggestion...DONT ask LEO about law...most will give their interpretation of the law.

The LEO's I've talked to go with the "picking up and dropping off" part and say it's fine. As with any law you leave yourself to local interpretation and it is always best to ask.
