Default Another Shooting in Savannah

One man fatally shot, another wounded in shootout

Arek Sarkissian II | Sunday, December 21, 2008 at 12:30 am
One man was killed and another was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after gunfire erupted Saturday night in westside Savannah, police said.

Savannah-Chatham police received a call about 8:15 p.m. about multiple shots being fired in the 900 block of West 38th Street, said metro police spokeswoman Judy Pal. The caller said a man was lying in the street. Reports indicated several men in two vehicles had been shooting at each other.

Pal said shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday that the identities and ages of the victims were being withheld pending further investigation by police.

When officers arrived at the scene of the shootout, Pal said, they found one man suffering from gunshot wounds to the neck. Then, a short distance away, they found a second man who also was shot - he was sitting in one of the cars involved in the gunfire exchange.

The first man was taken to Memorial University Medical Center. His medical condition was not known at press time, but Pal confirmed his wounds were life-threatening.

The man in the car died at the scene, Pal said.

The second vehicle involved in the shootout eluded police and was described by witnesses as a gold or a silver SUV with tinted windows, Pal said, adding that the vehicle likely would have bullet holes in it.

Forensics and violent-crimes detectives remained at the shooting site late into the night, Pal said.

One of the most beautiful and historic cities in the US. This won't help tourism one bit. How about a little seventeenth century justice when the perps are caught...thumbscrews, stocks and then hang them in ALL of the greens, one green at a time until all the residents get to spend a happy afternoon.

I am still on the look out for the SUV. Haven't heard anything new about it in the news here.

Savannah-Chatham police are trying to locate a vehicle that left the scene of a deadly shooting Saturday night.

Shots were fired during an argument in the 900 block of West 38th Street about 8:15 p.m. Saturday, police said.

Donald James Garido, 24, of Savannah, died after being shot in the incident. Another man remains hospitalized, listed in critical condition.

Police believe a silver or gold- colored SUV left the scene. The vehicle has tinted windows, and witnesses said it had some type of rack on the roof.

Police now believe the vehicle might not have bullet holes in it, as first reported.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the vehicle is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 912-234-2020 or the metro police violent crimes unit at 912-651-6728.

Anyone who spots the vehicle should immediately call 911. Police urge the public not to approach the car because the occupants might be armed and dangerous.
