Post My 1st OC Experience

Well with my brand new Glock 23 perched on my side, my family and myself headed out and about town here in Tucson for our weekly shopping. This was the beginning of the what was the first...and not last time openly carrying a firearm in public. Of course like the law biding citizen that I am, I made sure before even doing so that I read the blue-book of Arizona Firearms Laws, to familiarize my self on the do's and don'ts of carrying.
The experience was great. I felt a sense of empowerment over the safety and well being of my family and myself. What with the stories lately I've been hearing around about armed home invasions, robberies, rapes, car jackings...not to mention being a border state and what goes along with that.
So here's a list of the places I open carried in, and had absolutely no problems at:

Nanini Public Library
Frys Food Store
Safeway Foods
Albertsons Foods
Walmart
CVS
Sprouts
Baskin Robbins
Walgreens
Dairy Queen
Big Lots
Carls' Jr's
Arizona Car Care
Entemans' Bakery
Kohls
Subway
Verizon Wireless
Sweet Tomatoes
Toys R Us
JC Penny Home Store

Each of these places I went into OC'g, I was treated with courtesy and respect...like any other customer.
I never felt like I was being watched, or given any weird looks or anything like that...like I've heard stories of from others who OC in some places.
I plan to try OC in almost every place that I can go into like that, and see how it's recieved.
What I find weird here in Tucson is that for the most part everyone is so courtious and freindly...yet people can carry guns here! I'm originally from NJ (arrrrgh) where you're not allowed to even carry a pea shooter, and everyone there is so rude and ignorant...and the criminal element has more rights than the decent citizens do! Like...things are backwards some how....LOL.
So, I've come to really love it here...and I'll NEVER go back east.......

When I accumilate more places, I'll be sure to list them.....

Glad to see that things went so well for you. Then again, Arizona is one of America's more open carry friendly states, so this isn't too surprising.

The big thing to me about OC vs CC is that the bad guys don't know you are the one to take out if they don't see your weapon. I guess I like knowing that no one else (besides my wife and very few friends) knows what I have to protect myself with. I know a few people who would freak out knowing I have never been in their house without CC.

Good to hear you were not feared, since you were obviously not causing trouble.

Welcome to USA Carry, Glock 30. As for the implication that a BG will take out anyone they see is carrying, that makes situational awareness all the more important, whether you're carrying openly, concealed, or not at all. If the OC'er is aware of his surroundings, then he'll be just as prepared as a CCer to stop the threat.

That's funny that Glock30 mentions that, but before OC'g myself I've seen about half a dozen others OC'g, and it hit me as to "imagine how many others in the same surrounding I'm in, are CC'g"...so I thought myself....why would I want to be stupid enough to come into a place and start opening up on people, 'cause even if I took out 1 or 2 OC'rs...the CC'rs would just mow me down.
Hence where tattedupboy's very eloquent responce is...."situational awareness". And I found myself that day I OC'd for the first time. I felt empowered that I could protect my family and myself...other citizens...and be a possible backup to LEO's if the need be. I felt more responsible for my actions, behaviour, and "my surroundings". Good call tattedupboy....
I do plan on getting my CC permit, but will still OC. The Freedom to do both is so great. Love Arizona.
Thanks for the responces Brothers.

I wonder if OC will help improve the "Aloha Spirit" here in PRHI. Contrary to what the Tourism Board would lead you to believe, Hawaii is full of racist and rude people. Tourism is what drives a big portion of the economy, yet tourists are often targeted by the criminals.

People aren't as friendly as they should be. I find it odd that people talk about the "Aloha Spirit" but fail to help their fellow citizen when they're being beaten or robbed. I've helped in several occasions. A couple of times it was me against several thugs. An "armed response" would have been a lot more effective and would have saved me a bunch of cuts and bruises.

Isn't it odd that in places like PRNJ and PRHI, that the criminals have more rights than the citizens? It's like the government bends over backwards to offer every opportunity to a BG with a lengthy criminal history, yet when a citizen effectvely defends themself with deadly force (knife, bat, firearm, etc.) they are quickly arrested and charged. Only after a lengthy and expensive criminal trial are they set free, minus their firearm.

Great to hear that you had a good experience OC. I used to frown upon OC until I read a bunch of posts by folks who actually do OC. I would be selective as to where I would OC, as I wouldn't want to OC in a church or near a school, or when I'm in a rush (in case some over zealous LEO doesn't know the law). It's a personal decision if done properly can be quite effective and rewarding. As Tatt pointed out, situational awareness is the key. If you OC or otherwise, you should always be alert to what is happening around you. There are BG all over the place.

Keep us posted Nick.

"Situational awarness" is key in law enforcement and should be with civilian open carry as well. A good example;

One tactic I was taught the first night I was on patrol; We were on night patrol and both decided to stop and get something to drink. As we got to the convenience store/gas station, my partner drove completely around the store and looked inside while doing it. He asked me "why do we drive around and look inside first deputy?" I thought for a second and logically answered, "So we don't walk into an armed robbery?" He said right! Then he asked me "who is the first person that guy is going to shoot when you walk into that store?" I said; "the guy carrying a gun and wearing a badge". His response was "exactly".
