I've never owned a revolver before... went to my local gun store/shooting range and they had just received a new S & W Model 1917 .45 ACP reissue. Case color frame, blued cylinder & barrel, love at first sight! Bought it on the spot; to me, it's the most beautiful handgun I've ever seen. Haven't had a chance to shoot it but I sure like holding and looking at it. I've been looking for an original model but nice one's are expensive (and need to be checked over) and I'm told that due to some of the loosey goosey tolerances from the old days the genuine's aren't the best shooters and the new ones are much better. So, for now I've got the best of both worlds - the appearance of the original (a firearm that a couple of grandparents had used) and the modernity of new production. I'm keeping my eye open for an original Colt 1917/New Service military model but until then I'm certain I'll be happy with this.
there is nothing like a relationship with a new Firearm its somuch simpler than a relationship with the opposite sex.
You're probably right!
I'm sure you fired that mod 22 by now, and if its anything like mine, you loved it. I have the nickel finish model, and i agree it's the nicest lookin' gun ever made!!!
To mi .45---i'm sure you fired that mod 22 by now, and if its anything like mine, you loved it. I have the nickel finish model, and i agree it's the nicest lookin' gun ever made!!!
To sh2usn - I have fired it, and... I LOVE IT! Nothing like a big revolver to get the ole heart pumpin'. When I went to the range, at 15 - 25 yards it was hard to miss. Even my wife shot it well but due to the large frame she had trouble shooting double action but in single action she was deadly. I got a box of 255 gr. Auto Rim with the Keith bullets and I'm anxious to try that. I read somewhere that this is the perfect load for the 1917/Mod. 22 - we'll see. I also contacted S & W and they responded that .45 +P is a good match as well but didn't recommend .45 Super as it's outside SAAMI specifications and they won't guarantee the gun if something bad happens. I've seen mixed reviews on how much pressure the cylinder can actually take so I'm just going to go with the manufacturers recommendation. I gotta believe that your nickel finished piece is both beautiful and imposing looking. Is the lanyard ring nickeled as well? Do you have a Smith or Colt original to compare to the new model?
mi45--sorry it took so long to reply, i've been playing auctioneer on auction arms and gun broker.com. to answer your questions; the lanyard ring is not nickled it's more like a case hardened tone. unfortunately i do not have an original to compare it to. so far i've been using walmart winchester white box 230 gr. @ $29.95 a box(100) i can't find anything to beat that price anywhere and that includes on line when you factor in the ship costs. of course no one has any ammo in florida right now. i did get a s&w victory on gun broker.com--$350+ship--it's a s&w38 cal lend lease, the brits call it a 38/200cal--it"s in fair to good condition only because its well used but functionally sound--it now goes with my albion webly 1943 38/200 british side arm of ww2. sh2usn
sh2usn - I've been using the Winchester ammo too from Wally World and it works fine. This ammo thing is out of control; my local gun shop used to keep pallets of .45 on the floor and when I was in there last week they were down to their last 10cases and they didn't know when the next order was coming in. My wife carries a .380 and that stuff is practically unobtainium. I hope this lets up soon or real practice will become impossible. I'm going to a firearm collectors show in Detroit next month and hopefully I can get a genuine Model 1917 there. Most of the 1917's I see on line are at the high end of the scale and in our depressed economy if I can find something here in the state I think I can get a decent deal. I'm planning on getting a Colt as they're different from the Smith gun in respect to the cylinder latch, the extractor rod, and I'm told, the fabulous single action trigger. However, if the perfect Smith appears... I'll be in. I'm looking for the Colt though. MI .45
Mi .45 i know a nice couple that run a gun shop in st. Augustine. They just went up to the shot show a little while back. They told me many of the gun shop owners had a meet with the ammo manufacturers like winchester, remington, etc., and were told that the industry was filling large gov't contracts and commercial accounts were being put on the back burner until all contracts were filled. However true that is, it may be a few months before we see the pipeline start to fill again. You gotta figure that walmart has to be one hell of a big account to fool around with for no good reason---besides gov't business or bullsh-t
