    Default Magtech 30 SPL + P

I picked up a box of 50 Magtech 38 SPL + P 158 Gr. SJHP. What do you think of this round for self defence. I only paid $25.00 for the box of 50 rounds. My S&W 442 is rated +P

    Thank you

I think I'd use it for target practice first.

I've had very good luck with MagTech ammo. Quality stuff. I wouldn't choose the 158Gr JHP as my first choice for a snubby, but as long as you put it where it's supposed to go, it will work since the idea in a snubby usually ends up being penetration instead of expansion. However, these 158 gr JHP's will lose alot of potential out of a 2" gun. My personal favorites for the 38 snubby lightweights are the Speer Gold Dot 135 gr +p Short Barrel load, or the Winchester SXT 130 gr. These loads were actually designed and tailored for the 38 snubby for penetration and expansion performance, and as a happy medium between heavy JHP's and lightweight JHP's for standard 4 inchers.
