I've shot my friend's 637 and liked it but I liked the Ruger LCR better. I opted for the .357. S&W has dropped their prices so you should be able to get a good deal on one. I had no problem with the 637 so if you like it, buy it.
Looking at a 637 I'm going to look at a 637-2 and was wondering how I know what version it is and what I should look for in it? I was doing some reading on that model and do I understand correctly that the early version had some problems? So just want to be sure I'm not wasting my cash?

I have had a 637 for several years and never had any problems with it. I later bought a 642 and carry it more, but the 637 is still functioning well.
