I have the S&W 22A. An excellent gun. Accurate and reliable. The only beef I have with it is that the front sight post is a bit thick. On the other hand it has a top mount rail so I got a red dot sight :)
The Ruger Mark III is always a good choice and they come in several models from simple to full target.

.22s are good for target shooting especially a Ruger Mark III.

Why be brand specific? Ruger, Browning, Walther, etc. Big names, not a lot of support. Try something different on a tried and true platform. GSG 1911. I have one and it shoots better than my dads Mark II. 500 rounds and 1 each ftf, fte. My dads mkII, dirty, many. Good design, but hands down, my GSG. Just sayin.
The Ruger Mk III in the 22/45 configuration is a bargain, and can be had new for under $300. (Mine cost abotu $250, but the shop where I bought it gave me a sweetheart instructor deal.) Never yet had any failures.
If you're a fan of 1911 style pistols - this one's grip shape and control locations are meant to mimic them. The idea is that 1911 owners have a reliable but economical option for practice shooting.
Definitely a pain in the butt to clean - I won't do it without the manual sitting next to me.
But you can't go wrong with this pistol.

Love my Walther p22! Great feel to the gun. Reliable and looks great! Never had a problem out of mine. Wouldent trade it for anything.
