Anybody remember the "DC sniper" a few years back?

The source of the bullet was a hunter, in a 15 foot tree stand, a quarter mile from the road, shooting at a deer on his own land.

The only way to prevent such an incident is to prohibit hunting with rifles unless surrounded by a 2-mile entirely uninhabited radius.

Looks like someone needs a refresher in the concept of "know your target and what's beyond". At minimum, the idiot needs to have his/her hunting license pulled, and be responsible for any damage caused by the errant round.

If this is true then I agree with Idiot. A quarter mile is only 440 yards and within the range that some hunters will attempt to take game. If he was shooting toward a road only 400 yards away then he needs his license revoked. If he was in a 15' stand that means he would probably have been shooting down and the bullet should never have made it to the road so I would say he missed badly. Either way his land or not he is an idiot for shooting toward a road.

If he was in an elevated position the deer must have been on a ridge line or right along the road. Did they say anything about a ricochet?

If the bullet you fire hits somebody else other than the intended target you will and should have a problem, no matter where you were at, firing in what direction etc. If you don't have a clear backdrop you can't take the shot.

The shooter deserves whatever punishment he gets. Banning rifle hunting is a stupid reaction. Why not just ban hunting? Research shows that there are more accidental shootings in shotgun only country than where rifle hunting is allowed.

You never punish the many for the actions of the few, or in this case, the one.

Liberty is not just a word people.

The hunter should be punished accordingly for his negligent action and that he turned himself in should be taken into consideration.
