I have shot two deer with a. 44 Ruger Blackhawk 130 lb. and 120 lb. One at 75 yards and one at 20 yards. Both with a 240 grain hollow points. One shot each.
I want to take deer with my single shot .44 mag handgun, any insight on weight and type I should dial in with?

I have hunted deer with a 44 mag and first used a 200 gr JHP this did the job.
Now I use lead SWC and 240 would do well for deer.
Everyone makes a 240 gr bullet for the 44, pick one that you like. Bullet placement is the key.
Good luck
Thanks Stan, the 240 gr seems to be the most suggested. I will be sending them through a competitor arms single shot. Its a great shooter far mor accurate than my eye so I topped it with a scope to get the full range out of it. I haven't got behind it yet so when I do I'm sure I will post it somewhere. Thanks for your advice.

I used 300 G. in my super blackhawk but the velocities were to low for large bucks so 240 or 200 would be better.![]()
While I haven't taken any deer with it yet, I use 240 gr hollow points running between 1100 fps and 1200 fps. Pretty accurate at open sight distances. Plenty of bullet for a whitetail. This is in a Ruger Bisley with 7.5" barrel.
