Handgun too for hunting?

I just recently started shotgun deer hunting. And was wondering if anyone knows can we take a handgun along as self defense? We are allowed only 3 slugs n gun. At time but there are also 4 other seasons open such as coyote. I would like to have my handgun with me. But cant find info if its allowed

A call to the Department of Natural Resources is probably your best bet. However, my recollection is that Illinois, state-wide, is shotgun or black powder only (within their respective seasons).

Some politicians have apparently decided that Illinois is so flat, bullets can fly all the way across the state and kill children in Chicago. Slugs and mini-balls can only travel a few counties (kidding, of course).
