Thumbs down Michigan here, Im being forced to open carry!!

I read the requirments needed to obtain a CPL in Michigan and I did not meet those strict requirments. I have no felonies BUT because I've had a suspended license I am not allowed toave a CPL ( Not allowed to bear arms and protect myself!) which in my opinion isn't fair at all. There is also a 7 year waiting period just because I'ce had a suspended license! That is why I feel that I am forced to open carry! I would much rather carry it concealed.

If I had a CPL or knew about Open Carry I wouldn't have been robbed a couple weeks ago. I noticed 2 black males in Detroit sneaking up behind me and one of my friends. I could've done something about it if I OC or CC! I'm always aware of what's around me. I was EXTRA causious becasue I was in Detroit.

I think it's stupid and makes no sense that I can OPEN CARRY but not carry concealed!

I will be purchasing a glock 22 soon.

Your thoughts?

Question Michigan Carry.

To start with-You chose to live in the state-you have to live with their laws. With that out of the way-YES it is BS if it is true that your carry permit is held up for 7years due to a lic. suspension. Think of this-not too many years ago-ALL hand gun carry outside of ones property was illegal. Another thought on Open Carry=if 2 bad guys robbed you before-what do you think 3-4 of them will do when they notice you in the Open Carry mode? That's when 1 or2 of them get your attention, and the others take your gun away from you! Then they have not only robbed you of something worth $, you have added another hot gun to the streets!! IMO in some cases Open Carry can be more dangerous than no carry at all.

BillyBob,

I don't open carry myself but that argument is not going to work. There is not one documented case of something like that ever having happened. Please site it if you have it.

My license was suspended due to having too many points. I think it was 5 and it was suspended for a month.

Your thoughts?
Couple of comments. First, I agree that a lot of gun laws are stupid and do nothing to reduce crime. Second, I strongly recommend purchasing a Glock 23 rather than the Glock 22 since the G 22 is rather large and difficult to conceal when you are able to get your CPL later on down the line.

You may want to consult an attorney to see if there is something that can be done to restore your rights a little sooner.

Having a CPL or OC is not going to stop you from being a target of theft. In fact, OC in that city just might be an open invitation for other attacks. I would say that seeking legal advise from a qualified attorney is in order before applying for a CPL or trying to OC. I believe that all of the places off limits to CPL people would also apply to open carry. The Michigan State Police Web site (MSP - Firearms) does have good links to answer CPL issues and Michigan Fire Laws http://www.legislature.mi.gov/docume...s/firearms.pdf

With that ... Greetings and welcome to this site. Spend some time in this forum reading, There are some very excellent posts in here.

Michigan is kind of screwed up when it comes to carrying that's for sure. If you have a CPL you can carry everywhere except for the CEZ's listed. If you have a CPL and ppen carry then technically you can carry in those CEZ's (MSP has acknowledged this). The big issue with Open carry without a CPL is you are not allowed to carry anywhere licensed by the liquer control act. Anywhere that sells alcohol is off limits. This would include Miejers, Walmart or the local gass station that sells beer.

correct me if I'm wrong.. but I don't think this is quite accurate. isn't it something like...In Michigan, you can carry in a place that serves liquor except if the primary source of income of the establishment is the sale of alcoholic liquor by the glass for consumption on the premises, such as a tavern. it is not at all against the law to carry in wal-mart, meijer, gas stations and so on...
