Carbine Questions

I recently acquired a DPMS Sportical in 5.56/2.23 I'll be the first to admit I don't know much about rifles. I plan on taking an operators course soon.

I know how to manipulate all the functions of the weapon, field strip, and follow basic firearm safety with it.

I wanted to get opinions on optics, and other modifications that one would recommend for a defensive rifle.

It is a flat top with picitinny rails, there are no iron sights (are BUIS worth it?)

If you get battery powered optics you will be thankful for the BUIS the day you go to the range and realize you left them on the last time you went shooting.

If it were a toy, it would not matter. Since you consider it a defensive weapon, BUIS are a no-brainer.
