Default AR15 Accuracy at 100 Yds

I have an AR15. There is ZERO special about this rifle. It is the first rifle that I ever built. I did it to see if I liked the platform and just to do it! No special barrel, trigger, etc. I put a decent Nikon scope on it. It is a hoot to shoot as my son says. But, if I am expecting too much out of it, I want to know. And I don't want to prejudice anyone by saying were I am at.

What should I expect for accuracy out of 55 grn ball ammo at 100 yds?

I am not new to shooting a rifle. I have sort of moved up the food chain though. I also have a Remy SPS Varmint in .308 that will give me 3/4 to 1" MOA at 100 yds when I take my time.

PS.... I am a lousy shot.

    Default marksmanship

The weapon is very accurate. The military version, the M16, is only slightly different and marines qualify with open sights at up to 500 yards. I would suggest some open sight marksmanship training. Once you are effective with open sights and understand the fundamentals of marksmanship, the you can, if you still want, use a scope

My A2 HBAR, with decent ammo, can keep under an inch at 100yd.

Shoot it off a sandbag on a calm wind day with a clean bbl. ,and you will get a good idea what your rifle can do.

What is the barrel rate of twist? 1:9 or 1:7 or other? Length of barrel?

55gr projectiles play nice with 1:9 or 1:11 twist. Projectiles with more mass and weight play better with 1:7.. The heavier match ammo is more expensive, but will provide better groups with the more aggressive 1:7 twist. I was able to assemble a 4 shot group that was about 1 MOA at 100yds with 55gr .223 Rem off a bench rest.. Real slow...

As others have indicated it will depend heavily on whatever barrel you used. M193 ball is typically 2 moa ammo

Yup... M193 55gr is good bulk shooting stuff. M855 62gr or heavier will really indicate the accuracy potential of your rifle.

Another factor and one of the most important, is the muzzle crown. Clean from the breech end and be careful with the crown. Try and use a one piece rod. Slight damage to the crown will have adverse effects on the accuracy.

It is a 22" 1x8. with the 55 gr bargain bullets I am in a 4" group. I got a 1-1/2" when I shot it cold yesterday. I am going to spend some coin and try a heavier bullet and see what she does.

The kids (17 and 19) both love to shoot this thing so I don't get to just set and play around with the accuracy very much. They are shooting (and eating) me out of house and home! They don't think anything of blowing through a couple of hundred rounds. And I have a single stage Lee press. Keeps me busy!

You should be able to hit whatever you want to at 100 yds. That's what the AR is all about.
