After a year of waiting for the best deal, I finally got the Sport. Cabelas had it on sale for $599.
There are a couple things I would like to do to it & I need some advise. I'd like to change out the front hand guard to a quad rail. I don't have much experience with AR'S, so would the 2 piece be the way to go? Also would want to remove the iron sights, & put a red dot on it. Will the 2 piece set up work with a different gas block? Is pinned the best way to go?
My 1st. idea was to mount a 3x9 scope on it. I had hoped to co-witness the scope with the iron sights. Tried using some spare parts I have, ( a riser block & see through rings ), but wasn't high enough to see the iron sights through the rings. Maybe a different type of scope that is smaller in front?
I only plan on using this to plink cans & paper, but these ancient eyes I have are SHOT ! Need help !

If you are on a budget go with the 2pc rail, otherwise I would go with a 1pc free float tube. If you are not shooting more than 300 meters I would go with a red dot or holographic sight. Not farmiliar with the sport model,but it sounds like it has a flat top with flip up rear sight and a standard front. If you use a 2pc rail you dont have to worry about the front sight or gas block. co witnessing refers to being able to see both your iron sights and the optical sight in the same sight picture, useful should your optic decide to fail. Keep your sights as close to the bore line as possible.

If I went with a free float rail, does it attach to the barrel nut? A lot more dis-assembly. Right?

You're probably going to need a gunsmith to do everything you want to do. Now that you've been sucked into the world of customizable assault rifles (happened to me a long time ago), you're going to find your $600 AR is going to become more like a $900-$1000 AR. Good rails aren't cheap and working on ARs isn't a snap. If I remember correctly, isn't the rear sight on that rifle permanently attached to the upper??

That's probably why I only have 1 AR (that I bought already tricked-out) but have 5 AKs

It looks like the rifle he is referring to is a flat top. Not sure if it would be an ar15 A3 or a M4gery.

It has a flip up rear sight, MBUS I think is what it's called. Was trying to mount a scope high enough to see the iron sights below. Have looked at many pics & have not seen anything exactly like it. So maybe I'm on the wrong track.

You're right about the rear sight being flip-up but I still believe that it's attached permanently to the upper as opposed to being clamped on a rail. If you remove the front sight like you said you want to, what's your plan for a replacement? I could be wrong but I think that only the tall, triangle front sight will work with that rear sight. In other words....the stock sights are pretty much your only option when it comes to iron sights. You can still mount a scope on the top rail, you just have to use a riser of sorts (something that every AR needs for comfortable sighting through a scope.). I believe you can attach a removeable carry handle to the top rail of your rifle (a la the traditional M-16 look) and then attach a scope onto the handle. There are quite a few optics that are designed to go on top of the carry handle.

The rifle you bought is great for plinking and varmint hunting (as well as taking out zombies and rampaging terrorists ) but I'm not sure if it's the best choice for major customizing.

If not have a gunsmith swap it out.

The gun is truly modular so it is completely open to customization.

The rear sight does come off. I looked at the same sights yesterday at a local gun shop. Looked like the short version that would mount on the rail. Then maybe a plain low profile gas block. Melt? Are they plastic or aluminum or what? Hey, this is just a plinker,don't plan on rapid firing mag after mag.
You know, I'm just an old Marine trying to make it in retirement. So I don't have tons of $$$ to put into one rifle. That's why I went with the Sport. But I'd just like it to "LOOK" cool,even if it isn't up to battle standards.
So thanks for the input, going to a gun show next week. May get some different ideas from those guys.
