    Default Marlin.

You can't go wrong with a Marlin. They look good, handle well, and side ejection is condusive to scope, red dot or other optic that those of us with old eyes find useful.

30-30 Winchester 94. Used to have a side mounted scope on it. Still is one of my favorite rifles to shoot for both hunting and range time.

My uncle, who lived in Southern California, used to have a Winchester 30-30 lever action 'Golden Spike'.
    I loved that rifle.
When he died of natural causes, the police had to enter his home to find his body.
Someone 'confiscated' all of his better weapons but left behind the cheaper ones.
That rifle has 'never' been accounted for ever since.
Anyhow, I would recommend either the Marlin or the Winchester.

Find yourself a good used Marlin, or Winchester. Put a Williams windage and elevation adjustable peep sight on it. Load it up with PMC Starfire, better yet Hornady Leverevolution ammo. Keep your shots inside of 200 yds and you should be good to go for forever. Kahrmonger.

Any gun will last a long time if you take care of it (given it wasn't a piece of crap in the first place ;-).) IMHO I like the Win 94. I grew up shooting an older Win 94. It was then and still is in sweet condition. I bought a newer version of the 94 in the 80's and gave it to my son when he turned 14. If your serious about looking for one I have seen them online. Just do Google "gun collections+auctions" You can usually pick up a Marlin fairly reasonably. The Winchesters are going to run a little higher. Be careful to read all the description as some items can be in really poor condition.
