The February 2011 Downeast magazine has a feature "20 Reasons to Retire to Maine" I like number 8- "Maine is a safe place to settle down. Per capita, Maine has the highest level of gun ownership in the nation, and yet our crime rate is the lowest. Over the past 10 years, Maine has averaged 1/3 fewer crimes than the rest of the nation. Violent crime is 64% lower than the average."

Then why do they call them Maineacs? In all seriousness, I've only spent a short period of time in Bangor but the folks there were awesome and the lobster and beer couldn't be beaten. Now, if they just had the Rockies, it would be paradise!
