The Combat Medic Memorial.
You can find this profound yet non-ostentatious bronzed statue right in the heart of Fort Sam Houston, TX, just off I-10 right outside San Antonio. You have found probably the very best symbol of self-sacrifice and enormous courage that this nation has to offer: hope.... when before 'Nam there was not a lot of that for the sick or wounded soldier who more times than not succumbed to their injuries before definitive care could be rendered. MEDEVAC-ed by a Huey or Jolly Green Giant (USMC) to a safe rear hospital in an hour saved more lives than in any war before. It has called me and every U.S. Army medic back more the longer you stay in he skills Fort Sam teaches all it's medical students, and learn the trade of saving lives. I have seen it so many times and as a young novice medic for the very first time I gazed in awe and it inspired all who saw it to the Vietnam era stereotypical selfless actions of so many of our medics that for me it is just as important as the Vietnam Wall is in DC. A memorial for those who did not go to an unpopular war to kill, but to help as many as thy could return with the best tools they had, good training, an aid-bag and an RTO to call in a dust-off Huey. I touched it and the sheer power in that statue alone is beyond words I have the ability to write. "To conserve the fighting strength." MEDCOM's credo.
