Default 590 vs. 870 - Why is there a debate over which is better?

Being in law enforcement, the shotgun of choice is the Remington 870 Police model. When I initially got training with a shotgun, it was by a retired cop who had a 870 Police model with a red dot scope. I was impressed and attempted to buy one. All the shops were out of them, and that's when I came across a Mossberg 590A1. In my opinion, it was made better. It had better sights and the forend release/safety were ergonomically in better positions. It can be operated better with gloves on too. From a practical & tactical point of view the Mossberg has the advantage. Why the law enforcement community doesn't see this baffles me. Any clues?

You got me but you are not alone. There are a lot of people that think the Mossberg is better. Guess old triditions die hard.

I like the position of the safety on the Mossberg. From what I'm seeing, there are a lot more LEO using the Mossbeg 590. I think part of the reason for agencies sticking with the 870 was due to the availabiliy of accessories. There's a lot of good stuff for both shotguns on the market now, so I'm thinking that it's part of the reason why the Mossberg is becoming more popular.
