Man, 21, shot dead on Kingston street

KINGSTON — A 21-year-old man was fatally shot Tuesday evening in Midtown — the city’s first homicide in more than three years.

Detective Lt. Timothy Matthews of the Kingston Police Department said the victim was shot in the head “at least once” and was pronounced dead a short time later at Benedictine Hospital.

Matthews did not identify the victim but said he lived locally.

The shooting occurred about 7 p.m. outdoors on Cedar Street, near Prospect Street, Matthews said. He said no suspect was in custody as of 9 p.m. but that police were looking for a white vehicle that witnesses reported seeing at the scene. He said the killing might have been gang-related, though he did not elaborate.

Asked if police know the identity of the killer or killers, Matthews said only: “This is still a very active investigation.”

He also would not say whether a weapon had been recovered.

Matthews said anyone with information about the shooting should call the city police department at (845) 331-1671. Also involved in the investigation are the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office, the county Sheriff’s Office and the Ulster Regional Gang Enforcement Narcotics Team (URGENT).

BEFORE Tuesday night, the last homicide in Kingston was on Jan. 9, 2007, when 16-year-old Jarius “J.R.” Lightfoot was shot in broad daylight on Henry Street, also in Midtown.

Lightfoot, of West Pierpont Street, was shot at least twice — in the chest and the side — by 22-year-old Kendell George Wade, who was arrested two days later in New York City. Wade ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 18 years to life in state prison.

Authorities said Wade and Lightfoot were friends at one time but that the shooting was retaliation for an attack against Wade the previous day.

CEDAR STREET, where Tuesday’s killing occurred, was the site of two shootings in the fall of 2008.

On Oct. 27 of that year, an 18-year-old Kingston resident was shot in the left arm by a small-caliber handgun between Prospect and Sterling streets. About a week earlier, three people got out of a black 2008 Ford Edge on Cedar Street and fired at a teenage resident of the neighborhood at nearly the exact same spot. The shots missed the intended target, and police arrested a 28-year-old man and two 15-year-olds.

Matthews said police were investigating whether Tuesday night’s shooting could be connected to either of the 2008 incidents.

At the time of the Oct. 27, 2008, shooting, police said they were investigating whether it was related to a shooting 10 days earlier at the Rondout Gardens apartment complex off Koenig Boulevard. In that incident, at least two people got out of a vehicle and fired at least four shots at two other people. No one was wounded, but three cars were struck by bullets.

Four held in city homicide; fifth suspect at large - The Daily Freeman News: Serving the Hudson Valley since 1871(DailyFreeman.com)

KINGSTON - Four people, including the suspected gunman, are in custody in connection with the gang-related fatal shooting of a 21-year-old man, police said.

Detective Lt. Timothy Matthews, who heads the police department’s Detective Division, said the suspected gunman — Trevor Matties, 22, of 10 Rinaldi Blvd., Poughkeepsie — was charged with first-degree murder because the killing apparently was retaliatory against a criminal witness. Matthews said the victim, Charles King, 21, of 101 Henry St., Kingston, testified about a shooting last November that was committed by Mattis' brother.

The three other people charged in Tuesday's shooting — a man and two women — were charged with lesser felonies. One more male suspects remains at large and is to be charged with first-degree murder, Matthews said.

King was shot at least once in the head Tuesday evening on Cedar Street in Midtown Kingston with a small-caliber gun that has not been recovered, Matthews said.

King died a short time later at Benedictine Hospital.

Tuesday's homicide was the first in Kingston since January 2007.
