NYC long gun posession

Hello all,

First off I'm new to posting in the forum, but have checked out a lot of threads over the past couple months, this is a fantastic site! Also this is probably going to be a fairly long post, thanks for bearing with me.

I just purchased my first firearm, a Remington 870 Express. I'm not a hunter or a target shooter outside of simple practice with the weapon. The shotgun is purely for self defense and a tool for a possible WROL/SHTF situation.

I am a musician, and in three weeks I will be living overseas for five months playing gigs. When I return in January, I plan on moving to Queens. I am aware that there is a requirement that I register my firearm with the NYPD. I have seen conflicting information regarding the cost of licensing the weapon. Can you guys let me know how much it costs, and how long it takes to get the license? Can I get the forms started now, leave the country, then come back and pick up the license?

Also, of course I won't be living in a house, but in an apartment, probably with room mates. And since I'm a musician, my room mates are likely to be socialists at best and card-carrying communists at worst. Should I let my room mates know that I own a firearm? Also, since a gun safe will be pretty much impossible for me, what's the best way to store a firearm in a small apartment setting so that it's easy to get to, but still relatively concealed in my room?

One other minor question. At some point down the road I would like to get an AK-74, but I discovered tonight that long arms with pistol grips are illegal in NYC. Are there any AK platforms available without the pistol grip? I'm assuming not since simple searches didn't reveal anything. If not, do you have suggestions on a good non-pistol grip semi-automatic rifle with good reliability and stopping power in roughly the same price range as the AK?

It takes approx 10-16 weeks on average to get a NYC Rifle/shotgun permit. Being that you will live in an apartment the utilities bills won't be in your name, correct? That means it will require you to have your roommates to have a notarized letter stating that they are aware of you applying for a rifle/shotgun permit. (This is only if there is no utility bill in your name )
So it can be possible to come back and the permit may still not be ready but the day you drop off the application (it can either be dropped off at 1 Police Plaza or in Queens at the License division ) you do not do everything all in one day such as fingerprints. So I am not sure if you drop it off and then come back. I believe that it will delay your process .
The price : I know you need to pay at least $120 or less for the computerized fingerprint scan (Livescan) and then the actual cost of the permit in the neighborhood of $200. The costs are on the cities website nyc.gov/NYPD and click on permits and then rifle/shotgun permit.

As for your AK question.....you can't have anything that resembles an AK in the 5 Boros. No "ifs" , "ands" or "buts" about it . There is an extensive list of the firearms your not allowed to have in the 5 Boros and in your application you are given a list and sign that you agree to it too.

Holy crap is right! You people actually pay this? I wouldn't pay $320 for the 870 itself let alone just the permit to own it. Actually, I wouldn't LIVE anywhere that required a permit to own.

Oh holy crap, $320? Wow, I didn't know it would be that much. I actually spent $350 + tax on the Remington. The gun is like-new, but sold used.

NYC is the last place I want to live, but it's the only place near home (CT) where I can work in my profession, unless I go to Los Angeles or Nashville. I thought about going to Nashville for a while, but the cost of moving and buying a car would be prohibitive, plus all my friends are in NYC, so I wouldn't be starting from scratch from a networking perspective.

Well if this is the cost/process, then I will have to live with it. Another $300 is a small price to pay for the ability to save my own life. Although I shouldn't have to freakin' pay ANYTHING . . . . 2nd Amendment is pretty damn clear.

I looked at the NYC application, and under the examples of assault rifles that aren't allowed, it does list the AK-47. HOWEVER, there is an AK made by Saiga that has NONE of the features listed as illegal. Basically the main thing outlawed is the pistol grip, but the Saiga AK is available with a traditional stock. Of course I'll be double checking with the NYPD, but I'm hoping they'll allow that weapon. I'd rather have that than an SKS.

Oh jeez, I just saw that the M1A and Mini 14 are outlawed in NYC, there's no way they'd allow the Saiga.

It's ok to be upset with NYC, but show the 870 some love. That is quite the reliable shotgun. Mine is older than I am and had sent many a jack rabbit to the next life.
