Albany county permit application questions

I've started going through the motions for my pistol permit after my brother got his and I've got a few questions.

For references, it states they need to be from the capital district or surrounding area. Is ravena or coxsackie included in that? Also how well are references checked? Ie. background checks, or just a call?

How important is the supplemental pistol permit application? I ask because my brother didnt do it and asks if i have a hunting license which i cant find and id need a copy of it.

I live in Saratoga County and it seems that each county makes their own rules. For a pistol permit here my references had to be residents of Saratoga County. Didn't matter what town they lived in, as long as they were in my county of residence.

Never heard of the supplemental permit, it's either a carry permit or a dwelling permit.

No idea what a supplemental permit is. Ravena is in Albany County so it should be fine. Coxsackie may be OK, but give a call to the County Clerk's office and ask.

You should just call the Sherrif's office and get clarification. In Ulster county they now issue restricted licences, carry or home, etc. for new people. In all my years of helping friends get permits they have never called any of the references. They may do a simple google check, doubt they are spending any money on a real background check. I would avoid a ref from anyone funky. But call and get it done right the first time. Good luck.

When I got my original permit in Saratoga they sent letters to all my references asking them to be character witnesses to me. But like said above, all counties are different.

Just to keep it simple for them, I'd stay with references inside of Albany county. I know Coxsackie is 5 minutes down the road from Ravena, but it's in Greene county. Might make a difference to the paper processors. Good luck with the application, and glad you decided to take the step.

All counties follow the same law for approval of permit (NYS PL 400.00). Each county may have a different method of completing the application and some may ask for more information than others. However the criteria for approval remains the same throughout the state. NYS issues permits for gunsmith, to keep at premises (home or business) or to carry concealed. The standard of good behavior is the same for all types of permits. The reference check also depends on the county. Some don't call any reference. Others only ask if the reference was signed in front of a notary. Background checks on your references are generally not done at all. The most important thing to remember when getting a reference is the amount of time you've known the person.
