Magazine capacity

First I'd just like to say hello as I am a new member to this site.
I have been out of the shooting sports for about 15 yrs and now that my son is a soldier he often asks me to go to the range. So we're out there shooting military style rifles when it dawns on me that all we own are 25, 30 round mags. Are we legal, in NY, at a shooting range, using magazines of these capacities?Thanks.
