Default From out of start carring in NC question

I live in Indiana and I am going to be coming to see family in a few weeks. I would like to be sure about how I carry my pistol while there I don't want to get in any trouble.

I see that NC recognizes my IN permit. So I can carry but here in IN I can carry open or concealed the permit does not say one or the other just that I have the right to carry. I see in NC your permit says "concealed" but I am seeing where people open carry.

I normally cover with my t-shirt or coat but when reaching for wallet or cell phone it can be seen if you are looking. Can anyone point me to some links that cover how I should carry while in NC?

Many years ago growing up in NC I would carry in my car and if you got pulled you told the officer there is a weapon in the car and it needs to be on the dash or passenger seat if the seat is empty. Is that still the case?

    Thanks

Go to Concealed Carry Permit Information By State and click on each of the states , one at a time, that you will be going through. Under the how to obtain your permit information is a section that outlines where the piece can NOT be carried while in that state. I would recommend that you copy the info and paste it to a word document, (or other word processing document)and print it out so you have it for ready reference. Do this for each state that you will carry through enroute to destination, and once for the destination state, as well. This gives you piece of mind. Forewarned is forearmed.

    Have a safe trip.

Thanks for the link that answers my questions.

Not to be mean but NC is kinda harsh on where and how you can carry. I will be mostly out in the country on family land so no problems but I will think about not carrying in town.

Doing some more reading I am confused. Can you open carry in NC? Looks like you can if you read some of the posts.

OpenCarry.org - State Information For North Carolina

    Summary
North Carolina is a traditional open carry state. You MAY open carry in a motor vehicle. However, localities may regulate the carrying of firearms under certain circumstances.

Complete state preemption of firearms laws except localities may regulate the possession of firearms:
    • In public-owned buildings
    • On the grounds or parking areas of those buildings
    • In public parks or recreation areas
Additionally, under NC Code Chapter 14 160A.189, a city may by ordinance ... regulate the display of firearms on the streets, sidewalks, alleys, or other public property.

While the word "display" does not appear to be defined in the Code, some localities in NC have adopted, or are considering adopting ordinances like the city of Chapel Hill's which restrict the open carry of handguns.

This was challenged in State v. Fennell (1989) and the NC Court of Appeals upheld previous NC court decisions stating that the guarantee of an individual right to openly bear arms in the NC constitution was subject to reasonable regulation declaring that "a pistol shall not be under a certain length."

This topic comes up all the time and I'm not sure why. What do you mean when you can say that you can see the gun if you look. Semi-concealed is for rookie cops who want the world to know they have a gun and see a badge on their belt beside it by "accident". Concealed means concealed. Not when you look, when you bend, because your shirt is too short or your pants are too tight or because you aren't wearing the right holster, if any at all. If you want everyone to know you are armed, or are out in the country, open carry. If you are going to conceal, then concealed means concealed. Besides, if you conceal properly, you may not get in trouble when you accidentally take a gun where you shouldn't because of new laws that just took effect but weren't published.

As for where to look up NC laws, try the State website, the state police website or the pistol permit issuing authority in NC. All of the other sites are great resources, but won't do you a bit of good if they are wrong. The state sites can be printed and used as defense in court or on a roadside stop should it be necessary.

By "if you look" I mean this

I carry mine at the 6:00 position in my waist held in place by a belt. I then put a t-shirt over (tall so its longer then normal) and cover that with a long dress shirt unbuttoned or coat. I know if I move just right it could be seen so I'm very careful so it won't happen.

If you know what to look for you can tell most of the time if someone is carrying by the imprint so it is very hard to truly conceal carry and still have it in reach if its needed.

Hate to have caught in my cloths when its needed and end up dead.

In Florida you might get in trouble. In N.C. with a concealed carry permit, accidental exposure of your gun won't bring charges, especially since we are an open carry state.
"Concealed means concealed." Gosh, that sounds so original. Wish I'd thought of that one.
