I personally woukd have turned and looked him in the eye and asked "can I help you with something?" The OP made it home and safe and thats what counts.

Facts are that 8 feet, yes, if the guy is standing just 8 feet away,,,,,, it takes only 8/10 of one second to stick you. 2-3 lunging steps and your guts are stuck. YOU CANNOT draw your weapon and stop him.

I teach this in self defense classes. If you think I am wrong, you better pray that you live to be really old.
