Seems a bit harsh but...

The Oklahoma City School District has a strict policy that prohibits students from using “telecommunications devices during the school day.” Apparently, the school is sticking to the letter of the law in this situation.

But this is also a good question...

You have to wonder, if the same teacher had a heart attack and a student called 911 with a cell phone, would that student be suspended or lauded for acting quickly?

Every time I hear about one of these outrageous school decisions I wonder why a large group of parents aren't at the next school board meeting (held every month in my school district). In my school district the school board members want to be on the board. Thus they are responsive to parents who bother to show up at school board meetings.

About ten years ago my school board put out a proposed calender for the following year and invited parents to comment on it. They were looking for comments about the dates of scheduled vacations and parent-go-to-school nights, etc.

I noticed that the calender listed all of the Roman Catholic holidays but no other religious holidays. I made a list of as many of the religious holidays as I could find, which ended up almost being one for every day of the school year, went to the school board meeting and asked to have an all inclusive list of religious holidays shown on the calendar.

The final version of the calendar came out without any religious holidays listed. That wasn't what I had asked but that was what they apparently decided to do to save taxpayers the cost of printing an inclusive calendar instead of an exclusive one.

Fear of lawyers... It happens all the time... Knowing how difficult they make most simple situations the school decided to limit any exposure... The ensuing lawsuit would have cost them dearly... Some folks/groups are inclined to roll over... Complacency...

Not only have the schools done this but most of the parents have "abrogated Their responsibility for disciplining" their kids along with their responsibility to educate their children and not leave that totally up to the schools!

In my town "our schools" are "our schools." The school district represents the smallest unit of self-government. School board members are your neighbors. You know each other by first name. Your kids participate in both in-school and out-of-school activities together. If you want to be a member of the school board just attend the meetings for a year, get involved in the PTA and then run.

In my school district, parents who blame the schools for whatever problems they perceive to exist are simply not engaged in their children's education.

Your kids participate in both in-school and out-of-school activities together. If you want to be a member of the school board just attend the meetings for a year, get involved in the PTA and then run.

We had a school board member a couple years ago who, when we went to a meeting and protested their heavy-handed blackmail techniques in cutting elementary school busing until we passed the levy, invited us to vote him off the board at the next election if we didn't like it.
