That's what happens when you ask LEO about firearms laws...generally a very bad idea.
I was planning a trip to IN today from the oppressive State of Illinois with my SIG P250 .40 cal. I called,to confirm protocol with the State of Indiana insofar as CCW is concerned. I was told by a GARY POLICE DETECTIVE that I "could not carry in Indiana if I didnt have an Indiana Permit". I informed the detective that I hold 4 N/R CCW permits(AZ,NH,PA,VA) that are recognized in Indiana. I was THEN told that I was not permitted to hold all those permits as I do not LIVE in those states. I again reitterated to the DEtective that they were NON RESIDENT permits and that in fact I COULD be in possession of them and further that I COULD Carry. I was then asked what state I lived in and I stated Illinois. I was AGAIN told I could NOT carry concealed in Indiana since I was from Illinois and Illinois does not have CCW(yet) There was a rather heated exchange of Adult Language between the Detective and I and I hung up.
Thoroughly frustrated, I called Michigan City Indiana Police and was told that so long as the permit said concealed carry on it I was allowed to carry concealed. I was asked why i had so many permits and explained the overlapping coverage that each permit provides. It was a pleasant conversation and vastly different from the conversation that I had with the Gary Police Department. I would suggest that we all flood Gary Police Department with the ACTUAL LAWS so that they are aware of them before they automatically deny someone their rights. Suffice to say,I hope not to come across that Gary police Detective in a dark alley sometime. I will be going home for dinner. He on the other hand.......well lets just say I hope Gary Police Department provides one hell of a dental plan.
What a total STROKE.

Can't spell, try my best, have spell checker but every time I type Obama it trys to correct it to Osama, seems like it works.![]()
I looked up the law and THANKS to the Michigan City IN Sgt I spoke to here is the law:
Chapter 35-47-2-21 (will try cut and paste bear with me)
IC 35-47-2-21
Recognition of retail dealers' licenses and licenses to carry handguns issued by other states
Sec. 21. (a) Retail dealers' licenses issued by other states or foreign countries will not be recognized in Indiana except for sales at wholesale.
(b) Licenses to carry handguns, issued by other states or foreign countries, will be recognized according to the terms thereof but only while the holders are not residents of Indiana.
As added by P.L.311-1983, SEC.32.
Which PROVES the rectal plug Gary Indiana Detective was wrong.
What this law means is that you HAVE TO BE AN INDIANA RESIDENT TO GET AN INDIANA PERMIT AND THAT INDIANA WILL HONOR ALL OTHER NR PERMITS.
Regardless of reciprocity so my VA NR CCW permit is good.
Im going to Gary. I TRULY hope I cross paths with this idiot.
I took the liberty of e mailing the mayor of Gary to detail the contact I had with this goof ball and included the law as above so that there is no question.
It is amazing how many different stories that LEO will give you. But this particular Gary Detective was ignorant, arrogant, rude and he should thank GOD he isnt in Chicago.

But looking at the maps here on USACarry they say no states honor the Ill Permit.
Illinois Concealed Carry Permit Information | USA Carry
Must be the maps are wrong. :dontknow:
Oh I'm wrong I thought I saw cortchubby had a Ill permit also. (like maybe an LEO)
I had thought Indiana was like Michigan in that you must be a resident of the state that issued the permit; but no. All of your permits are good.
That detective must be confused with Mi law.![]()
