Why are some gun owners upset with the NRA?

I agree they are more useful than not (I am a member), but some things they do don't make much sense. My two examples: The nice NRA hat you get when you join is made in china ; They sent me some DVD of shooting stuff/training, and said it's free (1st in a series). Since, they've sent me 3 or 4 letters wanting me to send it back if I don't want the rest, but they send envelopes that need a stamp. I sure as hell am not wasting a stamp to send back something I didn't order. Call me petty, but they could've put a postage paid envelope in the first letter and saved 2 or 3 stamps.

I am a life member, but still get aggravated about some of their decision-making. One of the things that bugs me is their rating of political candidates. I believe that they rate candidates simply on their support or non-support of the 2nd ammendment. Sounds reasonable right? Therefore, just for example, Max Baucus of Montana, gets an excellent grade for support of the Second Ammendment. However what the NRA forgets is that the Second Ammendment is a package deal. For example, Baucus has been Obama's "step and fetch" and one of his prime supporters of the nightmare healthcare bill. What has this got to do with the Second Ammendment? Unreasonable government control in any area of our lives can be used to encroach and eventually violate second ammendment rights. For example, it wouldn't surprise me one day if firearm owners have to pay higher health-care premiums than the "sheep" among us. The NRA has too narrow a focus when rating these candidates. If government restricts your speech, raises taxes, or controls your health care, it can eventually impact your 2nd ammendment rights as well.

Then, in 1994, and at the special request of his then-buddy, Bill Clinton, Baucus betrayed his longstanding promises to Montana voters and became the single swing vote on pass/fail procedural votes on both the (NRA Backed) Brady Bill and the Feinstein semi-auto and magazine ban bill.
Saying that Baucus was the swing vote on pass/fail procedural votes means that if he had kept his promises to Montana voters, neither bill would have passed the Senate or Congress. Max's betrayal made it happen...

Thank you for that information. I'm embarassed to admit that I did not know all those facts. I do know that I regard Baucus as a compromising little worm who either has no moral compass or one that is seriously flawed. It is embarassing to reside in a state that has a reputation for rugged individulaism and self-reliance, then see the voters elect this little butt-kisser.
