and that's the mindset that Obama, Pelosi, Reid and a myriad of other legislators have. I really don't believe that they give a darn about the details (the extents to which they may have to go to retain that power). I think they're capable of anything! Be vigilant...stay informed...prepare for anything.

There would need to be a rule change in order to raise a large military group, and that requires an act of Congress. Someone, somewhere would notice this.

Also, there would need to be a law change to the Posse Comitatus Act, which again, someone would notice.

Even if all this happened, and the military was authorized to police the US population, it would be a disaster. Those in the military are people too. They may have sworn an oath to obey all orders from the President, but many would draw the line at targeting civilians - their own countrymen. Many members of the military would side with the anti-government crowd. Not to mention, of course, that the US population owns a HUGE number of firearms that would then be turned on military personnel. I'd rather be unarmed and unarmored in Iraq right now than fully armored and armed in a new civil war US.

Congress and the President would undoubtedly know this, plus by doing this, the chances of violence coming to them personally would dramatically increase. Only crazies try to assassinate presidents now; if this were to come to be reality, you would have your average Main St. guy aiming at top government officials instead of Jodie Foster-loving mental cases.

So I doubt this is really happening for the reasons above. Any attempt at military control in the US would result in political, social, and economic disruptions, and that is the last thing anyone (including the government) wants.

I actually did manage to read through all (now) nine pages of this thread. I still disagree with any real possibility of major military involvement in internal US police powers. There may be isolated cases of problems, but nothing like what this thread implies.

The National Guard and State Police did confiscate legal firearms during Hurricane Katrina, but that issue has been settled, and should another disaster ever hit like that again, I doubt it would be the same result in that aspect.

Operation Garden Plot won't be put into effect unless the ***** already has hit the fan in a big way. As I said in my post, the one thing we all fear is a threat to our individual lives. Putting this kind of order in play or using US troops to quell an uprising would be politically and potentially deadly. If a large army were to police the states, violence would grow, and the government officials who put it into action would then be targeted. Obama already has death threats from various crazies - why would he put something into effect that would increase the chances of him being shot, and not just by the crazies?

Also, put a large military group against their own countrymen, and many of the members of the military are going to go against orders and end up helping the citizens against the government.

Basically, the whole thing boils down to the same reason why Japan didn't invade the US after Pearl Harbor during WWII. Our defenses were very weak, and on paper, they could have landed in California and not met any military resistance until the middle of the country. In reality, and the Japanese acknowledged this, they knew that private ownership of weapons would stop them.

I retired after 27 years in 2007, first thing you are taught is to unconditionally follow orders...
Sure they touch on your ability to disobey unlawful orders, but in the history of this country alone, there have been very few cases where a soldier regardless of rank was successful in disobeying a direct order...
