I went to a meeting today with my 14 year old twin boys. They are going to the 100 year anniversary Boy Scout National Jamboree in Virgina this summer. At the meeting we discussed what the scouts could bring and what they could not bring.

The subject of pocket knifes came up. We were told that the scouts could bring their pocket knifes but that they had to go into the duffel bags that get transported to the camp site in the tractor trailer and not their back packs.

The reason? Because they are going to tour Washington DC on their way to camp.

My sons asked me why such a rule existed. I told them that DC was the bastion of liberal politics and that they were scared that some scout would go on a killing spree while they were in DC with their pocket knifes.

Somehow Washington seems to be f-up. No gun zones for soldiers in places like Fort Hood, no scout knife in 3rd grade cafeterias, .... now this! I will be tempted to arm my kid with a snubby if I have a choice so at least he can protect himself from politicians while over there at DC...What a world we are living in!!! Obama can invite a terrorist to stay in the Lincoln room for the duration of his stay here in the US but can't trust our boy scouts with a boy scout knife??? Something is wrong here somewhere....

You could teach the Scouts more self-reliance, a touch of civil disobedience, and support for the 2A and the American way, by letting them carry their knives. Of course, that's just me and I'm pretty radical...but, hey, our tradition is: we don't take sh#t from anybody, especially socialist politicians who are hell-bent on controlling our lives and destroying this country.

Scout, schmouts - it's turned into a liberal indoctrination organization anyway. Take your kids camping yourself and read the constitution to them. Better yet, get a couple of other moms and dads and form your own small organization that does scout-like activitites without the political correctness.

While there maybe troops like you speak of they are nowhere to be found where we live. We as a family spend most of our time in the outdoors camping, biking, rock climbing, fishing and hunting and my kids all have a copy of the constitution and are well versed in its contents.

With that being said. If you don't believe in or support the Boy Scouts of America that is your choice. However I still believe the BSA to be a worthwhile organization. IMAO.

I disagree with a lot of BSA policies. It's sad that Americas have become so litigious that many of these policies needed to be made. As with traveling to DC, this is one of the main reasons why I opted not to go. I was asked to chaperone with a local troop. I politely declined being that I didn't want to put up with a lot of the BS.

Being that the Jamboree is going to be in VA, one would think that a properly licensed CC permit/license holder would be allowed to carry. This is not the case. I was told that there would be private security actually "wanding" attendees to enforce the "no contraband" policy. If this is what the organizaiton has become over the last 100 years, I'll refrain from the Jamboree, and hide in the sanctuary of my rifle range.

I disagree with a lot of the national policies as well. But this is something that my boys want to do so they will be allowed to go. The wife and I will be camping close to where the jamboree is being held. As I said we have a very good troop in MO that teaches the core beliefs that the BSA was founded on.

Just because they are not perfect does not mean there is nothing to be learned from scouting.
