Cermak died of his wounds on March 6 and was interred in a mausoleum at Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago. The mayor's death was followed by a struggle for succession to his party chairmanship and to the mayor's office.
A plaque honoring Cermak still lies at the site of the assassination in Miami's Bayfront Park. It is inscribed with Cermak's alleged words to FDR after he was shot, "I'm glad it was me instead of you."
Zangara was electrocuted in Florida's electric chair on March 20, 1933, for he could not be charged with murder until Cermak died.

Giuseppe Zangara enthusiastically confessed to the murder and was executed only ten days after Mayor Cermak died of his wounds. Those were the days before the legal system realized the immense revenue it was losing without a lengthy appeals process in place. Lawyers soon cash-lobbied state politicians and created today's ten to twenty years delay policies in capital punishment cases under the guise of conviction-certainty.
Loved ones of murder victims, many of whom die of natural causes before the murderer is executed, know better than any that "justice deferred is justice denied" while lawyers corruptly get wealthier year after year on trumped up appeals defense fees.

The whole system is corrupt, it's a game for lawyers and a chance to line their pockets. Lawyers could care less if their client is guilty or not. It's all about which evidence can be thrown out on some technicality. Then if they loose there is more money to be made on endless appeals.

The average number of years between being sentenced to death and exoneration is 9.8 years.

Would you prefer that that those 138 innocent people be executed instead in your rush to execute?
Can you imagine the horror of being executed for a crime you did not commit?
What about the victims right to life? We seem to forget that many innocent men, women, and children are executed every day by the criminal element of our sociiety without any appeal, without any reviews, and without having an attorney to argue thier case and thier only crime is being in the criminal area of operation. I will save my simpathy for the family of the innocent, not the criminal element. As for being in a hurry to cover up the polices mistakes, do you honestly believe that?

We all know that. What do you propose that policy be based upon exceptions? The answer to the distracting exception is to tighten up the criteria for death sentencing. Since 1973 there have been tens of thousands heinous murders and atrocities, many upon children, with blatantly clear evidence and confessions. Only one justice exists for these crimes and life without the possibility of parole is not it.

Systems and policies are not perfect nor can they be made so. But our society's increasingly soft views on heinous crime, placing form in front of substance by playing the exception card, is a terrible injustice to the victim and loved ones.

This is a direct result of a.......I really don't have the words.
What should happen is a trial is conducted where finding the TRUTH is paramount. No suppressing information because of a legal technicality, no manipulation of the facts. Find the TRUTH. In a capital case, after a conviction and sentencing, have a panel go over everything to ensure the facts are in fact the facts. Make sure the person did it, legal niceties out of the way. Admit lie detectors, maybe even question the witnesses under lie dectors. Whatever it takes to find the truth. THEN, execute the criminal immediately. As it stands now, there is too much manipulation of the truth by the system to ever find it.
When our courts return to the pursuit of TRUTH, rather than the manipulation of truth, then we may punish the guilty and set the innocent (innocent, not "not guilty") free.
The job of a lawyer is to manipulate, alter, or obscure the truth to the benifit of the person paying them.
Even if a lawyer has a completely honest and right client and case, the opposing lawyer has to work vigorously to promote the position of his client....ie lie.
We have become a society of the people, by the lawyers, for the lawyers.

In a perfect world this would work. But too often it's a game for the lawyers to play and the victims end up being pushed aside. The criminals end up being the poor victim. Lawyers become judges so don't expect any changes any time soon. They are going to protect their own.
