what are we going to do? use all our oil up in the next few years and then be faced with the same problem we have now. Pollute the environment even more kill alot of animals that we like to hunt . Drilling in america is not the oil answer. Oil independence period is the answer. Let's get a short term fix until we can develop some better transportation and stuff like mandate all cars being made get 40 miles a gallon until we do something better. Anything. Not Drilling.

I think all the environmental whack jobs that do not want us to drill for oil should be the first ones to give up their cars and start walking. Finding alternative sources is fine and there is nothing wrong with pursuing that but in the mean time we need to do something before the economy of the US is completely destroyed. If that happens I guess all the tree huggers will be satisfied.

Even if we had an infinite amount of oil we could easily tap, and it did zero environmental damage, it would still be a bad idea.

Oil requires a lot of logistics. It requires pipelines, gas stations, trucks, etc. This is bad from a strategic standpoint, as it necessarily creates weak spots where our entire energy capability can be gutted just be damaging a handful of key ports and refineries.

We need a more distributed network of smaller-scale energy sources, preferably based on straight electricity.

Economic pain motivates change, and using oil or oil shale "in the meantime" will just get us sidetracked. We have to suck it up, stop complaining and just do it.

It will take time to develop new technology and this will help buy that time. I respectfully request that you rethink your position on this and get on the team for the big win.

I agree that there are resources that are currently out of reach. But we can use those as well as leverage to develop new technologies to extract those as well. Any time U.S. inventors are allowed to think outside the box, good things happen for the country and the economy. As per your avatar, "capitalism is my friend". I suggest you live it while you can or we may all be in a mosque 5 times a day facing east and sticking our butts in the air.:boom04:

If we find more oil, we won't be motivated to develop new technology. We will go back to 1985 and sit on our hands for a couple more decades. People are very myopic, and are highly unlikely to embrace something different when their current needs are satisfied.

Pain creates demand, which is fulfilled by suppliers. Take away the pain, and you reduce demand. That doesn't produce results.

Pain is a necessary ingredient for change. When the cost of the pain outweighs the benefit of inaction, it focuses effort, commits one to achieve a goal and causes one to work tirelessly at removing the source of the pain.

If gas goes back to $2.00/gallon, we will do nothing other than forget about working on the problem, until it eventually comes back - and far worse than before. We should address it now and stop thinking of reasons to tap out.

I respectfully disagree. Even if gas went to 32¢ a gallon, people these days would still want a vehicle that uses less of it or just want the gas for free. Americans are getting greedier and greedier these days, and the years of high gas prices have probably scared and scarred us enough to still consider other sources of energy.
